Work on improvements to Sierra County Road AO13 expected to begin in September.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation began taking bids for Spaceport America road improvements on June 21 and will continue to accept bids until July 18, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.

The improvements will take place on Sierra County Road AO13 at Engle to the intersection of county roads AO13 and AO39, which is the entrance to the proposed spaceport, which will be the nation's first commercial space flight facility, the Sun-News reported.

Work on the road project is expected to begin around September and be done by the end of the year, the paper said.

Officials also are conducting a corridor study for a southern approach to the spaceport from an exit on Interstate 25 near Hatch -- a study that is expected to take 12 to 15 months, the Sun-News reported.
