El Paso man says he concocted kidnapping story to avoid his wife's wrath.

Juan Carlos Rivas, 31, of El Paso, found himself behind bars Thursday after telling Dona Ana County sheriff's investigators that he had been left bound in the trunk of his car, which was abandoned underneath a bridge on N.M. 192 near San Miguel, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.

Rivas initially told investigators he was assaulted and driven around before being left inside the trunk, sheriff's investigator Bo Nevarez told the Sun-News.

But he finally admitted he had fabricated the story in order to keep his wife from knowing about a night he spent out on the town with three "friends," two of whom were female, Nevarez told the paper.

When confronted with inconsistencies in his original story, Rivas eventually told investigators he had struck his head against the side of his car to make it look as if he'd been assaulted, then poured transmission fluid over himself when he woke up under the bridge, the Sun-News said.

Rivas, who was being held in the Dona Ana County Detention Center Thursday, may face similar charges in El Paso County, Texas, where he filed a similar report, the paper said.
