Disabled man had left vehicle in gear after minor mishap in downtown Farmington.
Leonard Kellywood of Kirtland stopped an out-of-control car from crashing into traffic in Farmington Thursday morning after he noticed the driverless car roll toward a busy intersection, the Farmington Daily Times reported. Kellywood said he noticed a disabled man trying to catch up with the car in his walker, so he parked his own car and caught up with the runaway vehicle before it did some damage, the Daily Times reported. Farmington Police Officer Connie Johnston told the paper that the disabled man got out of his car after rear-ending another car around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, but left the car in gear. Kellywood said he saw the disabled man gesture to the woman whose car he had rear-ended to try to stop the runaway car, the Daily Times said. After struggling to get inside the rolling car, because the side and rear doors were locked, Kellywood said he jumped in the driver's seat and stopped the car about 15 feet from the intersection, according to the Daily Times. "It was jammed in first gear, and the emergency brake was half-way up," Kellywood told the paper. No one was injured in the incident. "It could have been much worse," said the officer who witnessed the incident from a distance. "I thought someone was passed out behind the wheel because it was obviously out of control," said Johnston. "(Kellywood) jumped right in and was really helping. He was really concerned about the guy."
