Dona Ana County deputies arrest suspect as he tries to hide in a nearby Dumpster.

Joel Garcia, 41, of Berino, is accused of swinging a pickax at his wife Wednesday night, then trying to elude Dona Ana County sheriff's deputies by hiding in a Dumpster about a half a block from his house, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.

Deputies said the woman was sitting on a couch around 10 p.m. Wednesday, when Garcia swung a pickax at her and struck the wall behind her, then chased her, ax in hand, as she tried to flee the house, the Sun-News reported.

According to investigators, Garcia had been drinking since 9 a.m. Wednesday with a friend who had just been accepted in the El Paso Police Academy, but the friend had gone when the alleged attack occurred, the paper said.

After deputies arrived at the house, Garcia was found hiding in a Dumpster about half a block away, and when he emerged from the Dumpster, he was holding a barbecue steak fork, the Sun-News said.

Deputies subdued Garcia and found the pickax in the Dumpster, the paper reported.

Garcia was being held in the Dona Ana County Detention Center, charged with aggravated assault on a family member with a deadly weapon, two misdemeanor counts of battery on a household member, interference with communications and resisting or evading an officer, the Sun-News said.
