Man arrested Sunday at Wal-Mart near Cottonwood Mall.
David Loya Villalobos, 38, was being held this morning at the Metropolitan Detention Center on charges of shoplifting under $100, conspiracy and child abuse (without great bodily harm), after being arrested Sunday night at the Wal-Mart Supercenter, 10224 Coors Bypass NW, according to Albuquerque Police Department spokeswoman Trish Hoffman. Villalobos and his wife were shopping with their 5-year-old son Max when Wal-Mart security personnel observed Villalobos take an item from an unopened package and slip it in his son's pocket, Hoffman said. According to a report on KOAT-TV this morning, the item was a computer memory card, and when confronted about it by store security, Villalobos blamed his son for the theft, according to Action 7 News. Hoffman said that Villalobos gave Wal-Mart security personnel his correct name but kept changing his date of birth. He also claimed to have no Social Security number or valid New Mexico driver's license, she said. But a check of a national computer data base showed Villalobos did have a New Mexico driver's license. The family has a northwest Albuquerque address, Hoffman said. Jail records show that Villalobos is a Mexican national. The child was released to the custody of his mother, who was not charged in the incident, Hoffman said. Villalobos is being held on a $12,500 cash or surety bond, according to jail records.
