Victim in "grave" condition
A man suspected of shooting his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend Tuesday afternoon at an apartment complex in northeast Albuquerque has been arrested, according to a criminal complaint.
James Kunkel, 43, is charged with shooting at or from a motor vehicle causing great bodily harm.
Kunkel allegedly shot another man in the chest in the parking lot of the Hillcrest Park Condominiums in the 3800 block of Montgomery near Carlisle about 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The alleged victim, a man in his 40s, was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital in "grave" condition.
According to the criminal complaint:
A woman at the scene told police she had gone to Kunkel's home to collect some items. She said the two were going through a breakup.
She said the two smoked methamphetamine before Kunkel drove her to the condominiums where she lives. The woman called her current boyfriend to tell him that Kunkel was taking her home.
Her boyfriend approached the car she and Kunkel were in when they arrived. He then punched the driver's side window, causing it to shatter.
She told police that Kunkel then took out a handgun and shot the man. The alleged victim crawled to some steps and stayed there until police arrived.
Kunkel fled the scene in his vehicle and was later stopped by police on the frontage road near Montgomery Boulevard NE. Police found a handgun on the floorboard of the car he was driving.
The woman told police that she ran into her apartment following the shooting but did not explain why. Upon arrival, police saw her run from her apartment back to the scene of the shooting.
