More than 20 percent of America's public school students are Hispanic.
In New Mexico, and America's two largest states, California and Texas,
the figure is closer to 50 percent. And there's a serious gap between
Latinos' successes in school, including their high school graduation
and college-going rates, compared to their non-Hispanic peers. The
difference is what educators call the "achievement gap," and closing it is a challenge facing the country.

I incorrectly reported that Monday's summit focused on African American students and the achievement gap would be closed to the public.
You can still show up at the Hotel Albuquerque to observe the summit. Here's what I posted on the Journal's main Web page a short while ago:
Monday's summit focusing on closing the achievement gap for African American students will be open to the public, state Public Education Department spokesman Danielle Montoya said in an e-mail.
The governor's office said Friday that registration for the event was closed, but that the event would be open to the media. After the Journal reported that the event was closed to the public, Montoya sent a clarification saying that the meeting is open to the public and the media for observation, though registration for participation is closed.
The summit runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday at the Hotel Albuquerque.
Monday's event will be the first of three aimed at closing the achievement gap and raising graduation rates. Gov. Bill Richardson is scheduled to deliver welcoming remarks for the event.

Two new studies find that immigrant Latina mothers give birth to healthy babies, but an achievement gap is present by the time those children are 2 or 3.
