All aboard. The bus readies to leave the station
|
If you have found this little bus station in cyberspace, you are to be commended -- and I want to extend as personal a welcome as possible under the circumstances. If we were gathering at the green and red and white bus station near Old Town, instead of here on our computer screens, I would do my best to give each of you an abrazo -- a big hug.

Oops, something got lost in translation on this sign in a restaurant window.

Today we start our 1,300-mile journey into Mexico. As you settle into your seats, remember that your observations and your own experiences in Mexico are warmly welcomed. Let's get to know each other as we ride along together for the next few days. No one got on this bus by accident -- we are here to learn from one another. But enough of my chatter -- Vamonos!

ATTENTION, ALL PASSENGERS! You will get to stretch your legs in Chihuahua for a while today, but then it's back on the bus for 15 straight hours. So enjoy the City of Pancho Villa while you can. I'm delighted you have started chatting. The bus was a little quiet at first. To Ginger, who lived in Sonora for 10 years and became a great fan of Mexican bus travel, I want to say YOU'RE RIGHT, the first-class buses are different from anything we have in the U.S. And Toby, we left Albuquerque at 11 a.m. March 1, arriving 11 hours later in Chihuahua. And Elayne, thanks for joining us -- all the way from New Zealand! We're going to be on the bus all week -- let's get to know each other by exchanging comments. But right now it's time to look around Chihuahua.

CHAPTER 4: SILVER COUNTRY Rise and shine -- you're in Zacatecas! This is the day we really play tourist, riding an aerial tram and going underground to see where the Spanish king struck it rich on silver five centuries ago. Feel free to take pictures, but watch your step in the dark mine. Chuck, thanks for your comment. Go ahead and email me and I will give you information on bus ticket prices. Basically, they're cheap. Now let's all have a look at gorgeous Zacatecas.

Thursday, May 10 | The new Basilica to Our Lady of Guadalupe, right, sits next to the older basilica in Mexico City. |
Greetings, my fellow passengers: Are you beginning to wonder how you landed on this bus to Mexico, and if the trip is ever going to end? Believe me, I am aware that this could be getting boring. Anyone who needs to slip off the bus in the next town and fly home, as Victor did once we reached Oaxaca, certainly has my blessing. But wait, wait! Before you all leave, let me quickly tell you about ...
