A new radio ad airing in New Mexico confronts former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias over his allegations that he was fired for political reasons.
The ad, paid for by "New Mexicans for Honest Courts," hammers Iglesias for securing only one conviction in the New Mexico Treasurer's Office scandal last year, and for not moving aggressively to target alleged voter fraud in New Mexico. The radio spot also chides the former U.S. attorney for prosecuting a "girl who put bubblegum on a ticket." The website for New Mexicans for Honest Courts lists no phone numbers and an email message I sent bounced back. Their filings at the New Mexico Secretary of State's office lists seven anonymous contributions of $100 last October, as well as $400 in contributions from Charles H. Coll, a Roswell attorney. State Sen. Rod Adair, a Roswell Republican, has also mentioned the group in his New Mexico Political Report. Matt Farrauto, the state Democratic Party's executive director, called the political ad "sad" and said it was an attempt to divert attention from the controversy over the fired U.S. attorneys, and the now-infamous phone calls that Sen. Pete Domenici and Rep. Heather Wilson made to Iglesias last fall. "I think it's sad when Republicans eat their own," Farrauto said, referring to Iglesias, a former GOP up-and-comer. "I would call it what it is - a desperate and diversionary tactic." Iglesias has said he felt pressured by the lawmakers to deliver indictments against high-profile Democrats before the Nov. 2006 election. Wilson and Domenici acknowledge making the calls but deny exerting any pressure. Listen to the ad.
