Pregnant high school senior, 18, was pulled out of class over parking ticket.
Karina Acosta, 18, a senior at Roswell High School, was pulled out of class last week for a parking violation and when it was discovered she was in the United States illegally, she was deported to Mexico, KOB-TV reported. Although Eyewitness News 4 reported that she was removed from class by immigration officers, it was a Student Resource Officer, 10-year Roswell Police Department veteran Charlie Corn who took Acosta from class last Wednesday and detained her at the school before notifying immigration authorities, according to the Roswell Daily Record. Acosta, who is five months pregnant, was taken to the Chaves County Detention Center, put on an immigration hold and later deported to Mexico, Roswell Police Chief John Balderston told the Daily Record. According to Balderston, Acosta was given several days to provide proper identification after being cited for a parking violation and driving without a license on Nov. 29 but failed to do so, the Daily Record reported. About 50 concerned parents, along with Acosta's mother, met with school officials and police last Friday to protest the deportation, the paper reported. Assistant Superintendent Mike Kakuska said the Roswell Independent School District has officially protested the arrest and deportation of Acosta to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement as well as the Mexican Consulate. Corn has been replaced as student resource officer, school officials told the concerned parents last Friday, the Daily Record said.
