Police say $5 bills passed in several stores since April 20 were obvious fakes.
Counterfeit money has been circulating around Gallup in recent weeks, including three convenience stores since April 20, police told the Gallup Independent. Store employees have accepted counterfeit $5 bills -- all of which were described as poor quality fakes, police told the Independent. "They're obviously fake -- from the texture, ink and markings," said Lt. Rick White, who said the bills were most likely produced through a color photo printer. Video surveillance photos taken from each of the stores are being reviewed for possible additional evidence, but so far no arrests have been made, the Independent reported. Police encouraged workers at local businesses to pay close attention to any bills they accept. "If the employee doesn't like the way the money looks, they shouldn't take it," White told the Independent.
