David Roger High, 61, has been formally charged with six counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and two counts of battery in connection with a Feb. 29 incident in which he allegedly fired shots at Luna County Sheriff Raymond Cobos and sheriff's Sgt. Joy Mullins, the Deming Headlight reported.

Deputies returned fire, wounding High, who was treated at El Paso's Thomason Hospital for injuries to his legs, the Headlight reported.

Deputies had responded to a call regarding a confrontation between a landlady and her tenant when they heard six shots being fired while talking to the woman, the sheriff's department reported at the time.

The sheriff's department's tactical team was called in, and Mullins maneuvered into a position where she could address High on a loudspeaker, the Headlight said.

High emerged from his house, telling his dog to stop barking, then retreated and emerged once again to tell deputies to stop using the loudspeaker or he'd shoot, the paper reported.

Then a shot was fired over Mullins' head, after which High allegedly yelled again at Mullins and fired again at Mullins and the sheriff, according to police reports.

Three TAC team members then fired at High and wounded him in the legs, sheriff's Lt. Allen Carter said after the incident.
