Police say Aggies' linebackers coach allegedly obstructed officer investigating incident with player.
New Mexico State University assistant football coach Barris Grant was threatened with arrest last week when he allegedly obstructed an officer investigating a reported violent incident between NMSU defensive end Rhyan Anderson and the player's girlfriend, the Las Cruces Sun-News is reporting. According to a police report of the incident, Grant refused to identity himself or Anderson as campus police investigated a report that the player struck his girlfriend at a parking lot on the NMSU campus last Thursday, the Sun-News said. Grant, a linebackers coach in his first year at NMSU, allegedly refused to disclose Anderson's whereabouts and told police "I'm not going to give you s***," later making fun of the girlfriend as she was being treated by paramedics for a cut above her eye, according to the police report. Police said Grant told the woman she was exaggerating her injuries and that the coach told them he tried to stop the woman from chasing after Anderson following their altercation, the Sun-News reported. Grant only revealed his identity after NMSU Associate Athletic Director James Hall told the coach that he would be arrested for concealing identity and obstructing an officer if he failed to do so, the paper said. Grant allegedly told the officer he didn't reveal his identity earlier because he thought it was the officer's job to find out who he was, according to the Sun-News. Anderson, 22, was arrested and charged with two counts of misdemeanor battery on Thursday, and at his arraignment the following day he pleaded guilty to one count while the second count was dismissed, Assistant District Attorney Jacinto Palomino told the Sun-News. Anderson will be sentenced Aug. 18 by Magistrate Richard Silva and could get up to a year in jail and a $500 fine, the paper reported. 6:20am 7/25/08 -- Aggie Defensive End Arrested: NMSU says it will handle misdemeanor battery charge internally; coach to determine discipline. New Mexico State University defensive end Rhyan Anderson was arrested Thursday on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge stemming from an incident involving Anderson and his girlfriend on the NMSU campus, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported. "This is an unfortunate incident and I will continue to gather all the facts," head football coach Hal Mumme told the Sun-News. The NMSU student-athlete handbook says a misdemeanor charge will be handled internally and that it is up to the head coach to determine punishment, the Sun-News reported. Anderson, a transfer from the University of Miami prior to last season, started in all 13 games for the Aggies last season, the paper said. The 6 foot 5 inch, 263-pound lineman was a highly touted recruit out of Oak Creek (Wis.) High School but made a minimal impact with the Hurricanes before transferring to NMSU, the Sun-News reported.
