Come-from-behind victory means senior division softballers will head to World Series.

The West Mesa senior division softball All-Stars were down 6-0 in the third inning of the Southwest Region tournament in San Antonio, Texas, Monday but came from behind to beat the Texas East All-Stars from El Campo, Texas, 8-7 and earned a trip to the Senior League Softball World Series, the Albuquerque Journal's Jessica Dyer reported this morning.

The tournament begins Sunday in Lower Sussex, Del., and will include teams from Germany, Canada, the Philippines and other regional champions from through the United States, the Journal reported.

No team from New Mexico has ever won the series, according to the league's Web site.

9:30am 7/28/08 -- West Mesa All-Stars a Game Away From Series: ABQ Senior League Softball team faces El Campo, Texas, tonight for southwest regional title.

The West Mesa Little League Senior Division Softball All-Stars are just one game away from going to the Senior League Softball World Series in Lower Sussex, Del., next week.

All they have to do is beat the East Texas team from El Campo, Texas, at a game in San Antonio, Texas, at 5 p.m. MDT, and the Albuquerque team will be on its way to the series that begins on Aug. 3, with teams from across the United States, Canada, Asia and Latin America.

If El Campo should win, West Mesa will get another bite at the apple in a second game to begin 30 minutes after the first game is over, according to the Senior League Softball Web site.

The West Mesa All Stars are made up of the best players from West Mesa Little League's Diamonds and Silver Bullets softball teams and going into the Southwest Region Tournament in San Antonio last weekend, they hadn't lost a game, according to a story in the West Side Journal last week.

The girls -- who range in age from 13 to 17 -- cruised to the District 8 title, then slammed Silver City 12-1 for the state championship, the Journal's Jessica Dyer reported.

"I think we have a good chance at taking (regionals) if we go and play hard and give it all we've got," team veteran Veronica Jaramillo told the Journal. "For most of us, it's our last year, so we want to go as far as possible."
