Five suspects in custody in connection with eastern N.M., west Texas armed robbery spree.
Three of the five suspects arrested late last month in Clovis for an armed-robbery spree in eastern New Mexico and west Texas were charged Wednesday in a pair of home invasions in Portales, the Portales News-Tribune reported this week. Jeremy Enriquez, 19; Mark Aragon, 15; and Oscar Hernandez, 16, all of Clovis, were charged in connection with armed home invasions in Portales on July 25 and July 27, Portales Police Capt. Lonnie Berry told the News-Tribune. Berry said police expect to file charges soonagainst two other suspects, also from Clovis, who were arrested on July 29, the News-Tribune said. "We think they're all apprehended," Berry said of the Portales robberies. "We've put a pretty good case together. We feel like we've got everybody (who should be) accountable." Police said the five suspects would enter homes and threaten residents with a handgun, stealing vehicles and other items from the homes, and in one of the Portales incidents, two of the residents were struck in the head with a handgun, the News-Tribune reported.
6:05am 7/30/08 -- Five Arrested in Home Invasions: Two adults, three juveniles accused of at least seven armed break-ins in Clovis, Portales. Two adult males and three male juveniles were arrested Tuesday in connection with a series of armed home invasions in the Clovis and Portales area, the Clovis News Journal reported. The suspects were taken into custody while police were investigating the latest home invasion in Clovis just before 2 a.m. Tuesday, when police responded to a report of shots fired and found a 28-year-old man walking along a street heavily bleeding from a head wound, the News Journal reported. Curry County sheriff's deputies located a woman walking in the area, and she eventually led them to her home where the suspects were found, according to a Clovis Police Department news release. Clovis police Capt. Patrick Whitney said information gathered from the suspects tied the group to a recent string of at least seven armed home invasions in the area, the News Journal said. Whitney said all five had local gang ties and may have been involved in a recent Muleshoe, Texas, home invasion, the paper reported. Texas authorities also are looking at the group as possible suspects in home invasions in Lubbock, according to Whitney. One of those in custody, 19-year-old Jeremy Enriquez, also was charged on an unrelated, outstanding warrant for auto theft, the News Journal said. Police will release the names of the others in custody -- ages 22, 17, 16 and 15 -- later this week, the paper reported.
8:25am 7/29/08 -- Portales Hit by Home Invasions: Armed holdups within a block of each other Friday and Sunday are related, say police. Armed home invasions within a block of each other on Friday and Sunday appear to be the work of the same people, Portales Police Capt. Lonnie Berry told the Portales News-Tribune. Two men in their 20s were injured Sunday night after five people broke into a home around 11 p.m. and struck them in the head with a handgun, Berry told the paper. "The residents were treated at the scene by our local EMS crew," Berry said. "They later took a personal vehicle to Roosevelt General Hospital." A vehicle stolen at the residence was later found on N.M. 467, the road to Cannon Air Force Base, and it appeared the vehicle had been involved in an accident, Berry told the News-Tribune. The Friday incident also occurred around 11 p.m., when three people burst into a home and stole a vehicle from the occupant, along with some cash and jewelry, police told the paper. "Nobody was hurt in this robbery, but like the second robbery, a vehicle was stolen from the residence," said Berry. "The vehicle was recovered Saturday in Clovis." Berry said Portales Police are collaborating with Curry County and Clovis law enforcement but would not confirm if there is a connection to two similar recent home invasions in Curry County. The Curry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a home invasion July 21 on County Road 6 involving three male victims in their late teens and early 20s. One of the victims was struck in the head with a firearm and a vehicle was taken from that residence, the News-Tribune reported. A Clovis home on Sheldon Street also was invaded early Friday morning and two vehicles taken from the victims, police have said.
