Border Patrol agents seized more than 380 pounds of marijuana last weekend at a checkpoint on U.S. 54 south of Alamogordo, from a horse trailer that was carrying no horses, the Alamogordo Daily News reported.

Agents had been alerted by the Drug Enforcement Agency to a possible smuggling load that would move through the checkpoint over the weekend with a suspect vehicle described as a late model Dodge pickup, according to a Border Patrol news release.

Around 12:15 p.m. Saturday, a 2006 Dodge Ram pickup hauling a horse trailer with no horses inside pulled up to the checkpoint, the release said.

An agent noticed the vehicle didn't have a license plate, and the driver's suspicious mannerisms led to more questioning, and eventually a search of the trailer and tack room, the Daily News reported.

A canine search led to a hidden compartment behind an after-market wall installed inside the trailer, which turned out to contain eight duffel bags and a box containing plastic-wrapped bundles of marijuana, according to the news release.

A total of 328 bundles containing 383.22 pounds of marijuana was discovered and turned over to the DEA, along with the driver of the Dodge Ram, a 35-year-old U.S. citizen from Oklahoma, who was not further identified, the Daily News reported.
