Boy went missing at family gathering south of Brantley Lake Monday afternoon.
A 3-year-old Carlsbad boy died Monday as the result of a drowning accident on the Pecos River south of Brantley Lake, the Carlsbad Current-Argus reported. Eddy County sheriff's deputies were called at 3:52 p.m. Monday to Capitan Reef Road north of Carlsbad after a report of a drowning, and when they arrived they found Xander Dillard being given CPR by two Boy Scout scoutmasters, the Current-Argus said. Deputies took the boy in their patrol car until they were met by an approaching ambulance, which then transported him to Carlsbad Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, the paper reported. The boy had been on a family outing with his mother, his mother's sister, the sister's boyfriend and an 11-year-old cousin, and the boy had been on the riverbank while the others were swimming when he went missing, the Current-Argus said. The mother's sister, Donya Wolf, located the boy in the water southeast of the Pecos River crossing on Capitan Reef, sheriff's Capt. Leon Newman told the Current-Argus. She tried to give the boy CPR and called for emergency assistance, and the group moved toward a road where they ran into a Boy Scout group from Midland, Texas, and the scoutmasters took over CPR until deputies arrived, the Current-Argus said. An autopsy is being conducted at the state Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque to determine the exact cause of death, the paper reported.
