A good omen? Several stations are selling regular unleaded at less than $3.70 a gallon.
12:55pm UPDATE: We've had several people ask what the big deal is about a gasoline price war in Alamogordo, when a gallon of regular unleaded is selling for just $3.57 in and around Albuquerque. So, we stand corrected and will do what we should have done in the first place, go to AlbuquerqueGasPrices.com, which shows that gas is selling for $3.57 at Smith's on McMahon and Golf Course NW, the Plateau at 5565 4th NW, Sam's Club at Renaissance and Culture NE, Smith's on Rio Rancho Blvd. and Southern, and the Costcos at Renaissance and Alexander NE and Coors Bypass and Eagle Ranch Rd. NW. And there's a whole slew of places you can get your fill-up at just a penny more a gallon, according to the Web site. That's still well below the average price per gallon in Albuquerque, which is $3.714 today, down a few pennies from yesterday's $3.757 a gallon.
Gas stations in Alamogordo were selling regular unleaded gasoline for $3.68 and $3.69 a gallon, the El Paso Times reported on Monday. And a check of NewMexicoGasPrices.com this morning showed that it's going even lower, at least at Alamogordo's Sav-O-Mat at 10th Street and Vermont Avenue, where it's going for $3.65 a gallon. The same Web site shows eight stations in and around Alamogordo are holding steady at $3.68 a gallon. But before you get ready to drive all the way down south, the Fina station near Main Street in Los Lunas is tied for lowest gas price in New Mexico at $3.65 a gallon, according to NewMexicoGasPrices.com. Lowes on 200 Marguerite in Gallup is pumping regular unleaded gas at $3.67 a gallon, the bargain-hunter's Web site is reporting. A Lowes Pay & Save employee in Alamogordo told the El Paso Times that the trend apparently began last Thursday, when one local outlet dropped its price and several others followed suit. Gasoline prices in El Paso and Las Cruces were still stuck near the $4 a gallon range, the Times reported on Monday. New Mexico's average price per gallon was listed at $3.907, up slightly from Tuesday, but down from $4.044 last week, according to NewMexicoGasPrices. com.
