Tax-free holidays begin Friday; expect crowds

State officials say New Mexico families are expected to avoid an estimated $4.6 million in taxes this weekend.

No tax will be levied on purchases of some clothing, school supplies and computers.

The tax-free holiday starts at 12:01 a.m. tomorrow and lasts until 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

Although billed as a back-to-school tax break, the holiday is not limited to shoppers with school-age children. An individual can benefit if they buy items covered by the tax holiday at a retailer that participates in the program.

Susan Stiger outlined the program in this story .
