Renters and others being let in starting today

Homeowners in Ruidoso's upper canyon area were being allowed in over the weekend to recover possessions after flooding closed the area on July 27th.

The overflowing Rio Ruidoso damaged about 200 homes, washed out 13 bridges and prompted the rescues of about 900 residents and campers. One man was killed.

Those entering the area over the weekend were asked for identification and had to go in through a checkpoint.

Renters, contractors and caretakers of homes in the upper canyon will be allowed in starting today.

Contractors and caretakers will be allowed only during daylight hours, while homeowners and renters are being allowed 24-hour access.

But village officials discourage people from living in the area because it lacks gas, water and sewer service.
