They went in - and came right back out.
A special session of the state legislature convened by Gov. Bill Richardson kicked off shortly after noon on Friday, only to temporarily recess until later in the afternoon.
Lawmakers in both the House and the Senate said they had yet to receive proposed legislation from the office of the governor, who called the state's 112 part-time lawmakers to Santa Fe to consider a handful of proposals including tax rebates, health-care reform and highway funding.
"Nobody's seen the governor's bills. We don't know what he's got," Senate President Pro Tem Tim Jennings, D-Roswell, said moments after that chamber recessed until at least 2:30 p.m.
Many lawmakers are concerned about falling revenue projections and how much money the state can commit to Richardson's proposals in a shaky economy. And Jennings said the possibility still exists for the Senate to adjourn later today without considering any of the items on the governor's wish list.
"That could always happen," Jennings said.
