Prestigious gas balloon competition ends in Wisconsin, nearly 1,200 miles from ABQ.
The British team of David Hempleman-Adams and Jonathan Mason are the unofficial winners of the 52nd Coupe Aeronautique Gordon Bennett, flying nearly 1,200 miles from Albuquerque to Wisconsin, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta announced. It's the first team from the United Kingdom to win the prestigious gas-balloon race, and that means the British will host the Gordon Bennett two years from now, fiesta officials said. Next year's race will be held in Geneva, Switzerland. Apparent second-place finishers are the Austrian team of Gerald Stuerzlinger and Helmut Meierhofer, who landed around 1 a.m. today near Rochester, Minn., the fiesta said. Unofficial winners of the 13th America's Challenge Gas Balloon Race are Mark Sullivan of Albuquerque and Cheri White of Austin, Texas, who landed last night north of Iowa Falls, Iowa, after logging 882 miles, according to a fiesta news release. Sullivan is the founder of the America's Challenge race, which began in 1995. Here is a summary of the Gordon Bennett results, as well as the America's Challenge summary. Official results should be available late Saturday, the Balloon Fiesta said.
