State Police investigating Saturday night incident in which man allegedly threatened deputy.
A Bovina, Texas, man was shot and killed Saturday night by a Hatch police officer following a Saturday night disturbance call and a short pursuit, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported. The incident began around 7:40 p.m. Saturday when a Dona Ana County sheriff's deputy responded to the disturbance call, and a Hatch police officer also responded, New Mexico Department of Public Safety spokesman Peter Olson told the Sun-News. When the Hatch officer arrived, five men jumped into a car, and there was a short pursuit after which the vehicle stopped, two men jumped out of the car and ran into the desert while three others stayed behind, the Sun-News said. As the officer tried to get the three men to the ground, 20-year-old Alfred Soto became uncooperative and began to make verbal threats, the paper reported. "Rocks started being thrown at the officers from the desert," Olson told the Sun-News. One man, 32-year-old Javier Soto, came out from the desert, advancing toward the sheriff's deputy who had arrived at the scene with a rock, Olson said. The deputy used a Taser on Javier Soto, but it didn't seem to work, and that's when the Hatch officer fired his weapon and Soto died at the scene, Olson told the paper. Alfredo Soto and a third man, Juan Martinez, were arrested and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer, the Sun-News said. Alfredo Soto also faces a charge of assaulting an officer, the paper reported. Two juveniles at the scene were released to their guardians, and both the adults and juveniles were intoxicated, Olson told the Sun-News. The identity of the Hatch officer and his status were unknown Sunday, and the State Police is continuing to investigate the incident, the Sun-News said.
