Small plane crashed during a thunderstorm Saturday evening about a mile from airport.

New Mexico State Police have identified the two men killed in Saturday's small plane crash northwest of the Santa Teresa airport as Michael Perry, 46, of Avondale, Ariz., and Jim Crosby, age and hometown unknown, the El Paso Times reported.

The plane crashed during a thunderstorm about a mile from the airport's runway around 6 p.m. Saturday, state Department of Public Safety spokesman Peter Olson told the Times.

Witnesses told investigators they saw the plane take off, then crash and burn on impact, the paper reported.

No other people were believed to have been aboard the plane, State Police said.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were on scene Sunday investigating the accident, Olson told the Times.
