A lot more people will be dipping their straws into New Mexico's dwindling water supplies in the future, a new report from state water officials concludes.

The population projections, developed for the New Mexico Office of State Engineer by UNM's Bureau of Business and Economic Research, calls for a nearly 25 percent population increase by 2020, most of that in the greater Albuquerque area.

From a short announcement sent around this morning:

It is projected that the population of New Mexico will increase from the July 1, 2007 estimate of 2,059,075 to 2,540,145 in 2020 and to 3,710,875 by 2060. A majority of this growth is expected to occur within the Albuquerque Metropolitan Area.
The full report is not yet posted on line. I'll add a link when they put it up.
