Mother had claimed her 1-month-old child was injured when she drove over speed bumps.

Alma Venzor, 29, of Santa Teresa, was sentenced this week to three years in prison on a charge that she abused her then-1-month-old child in July 2002, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.

Venzor took the baby, Giovanni Ramos, to Providence Hospital in El Paso telling hospital staff the boy was vomiting and had diarrhea, and hospital staff called police after they found evidence that the child was suffering from shaken-baby syndrome, the Sun-News said.

The mother later told investigators the boy had been injured in his car seat when she drove too fast over speed bumps, the paper reported.

Venzor was tried in 2006 on a charge of first-degree child abuse, but a mistrial was declared when the jury could not reach a verdict, the Sun-News said.

She pleaded no contest to lesser charges in August, the paper reported.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Susan Riedel told the Sun-News that the child is now in the care of family members.
