The Albuquerque Journal announced staff reductions today as part of a restructuring in the newsroom aimed at reducing costs. Thanks in part to attrition over the past year, the number of newsroom jobs eliminated this week is fewer than 10 — a small percentage of the total newsroom.
“The people affected are good journalists who have made valuable contributions to the Journal,” said publisher T.H. Lang. In addition, the Albuquerque Publishing Company announced staff reductions in its circulation, advertising, production and other departments. The publishing company and Journal are taking other measures to reduce costs, including: reducing distribution of the Journal in the eastern and southwestern parts of the state; publishing the Rio Rancho and West Side Journals on Thursdays and Saturdays only; consolidating the Monday and Thursday Business Outlooks into one, beefed-up Monday Outlook. “The economic environment is forcing newsrooms across the country to make painful decisions,” said Lang. “Despite the challenges, the Journal will continue to focus on providing in-depth, thorough coverage of news that most affects our readers.”
