It's been a relatively slow news day, so let's hit the bullet points:
- The mayor is in Washington, D.C., today, apparently irritated that Congress is favoring highways over mass transit in the proposed economic-stimulus package. This economist would like to see federal help for transit operating budgets, which have been hit hard by sluggish tax revenue even as ridership climbs.
- There's an enormous dirt hole by the intersection of Lomas and Broadway NE. It's a flood-reduction project built by the city. The question now is how to spruce it up, perhaps by putting a park on top of it. City executives told the City Council this week they would like to purchase more land to the north from the Post Office and move the hole there. That would allow for commercial development along Lomas, a key gateway to the Downtown core.
- Councilor Isaac Benton said he's open to renaming Gibson Boulevard. He pointed out that a name with a veterans theme might be appropriate, given the road's proximity to the veterans hospital, Kirtland Air Force Base and memorials. Above is a picture of Gibson and Carlisle SE.
