Regular runs delayed by icing at the summit, after separate mishaps strand riders this week.

About 30 passengers on the Sandia Peak tram were stuck for hours on Thanksgiving Day, dangling high over the mountainside from about 1 p.m. to around 4:40 p.m. on Thursday, according to this televised report from KOAT-TV.

High winds and heavy rain, turning to snow and sleet, may have triggered an automatic shutdown of the tram in mid-flight, officials told Action 7 News.

It was the second incident in as many days involving the tram, as more than 100 customers dining at the High Finance restaurant were left stranded atop Sandia Peak for several hours Wednesday night, the Albuquerque Journal reported on Thursday.

Employees discovered a mechanical failure on the tram around 5 p.m. Wednesday, which took several hours to fix, tram manager Jay Blackwood told the Journal.

The tram didn't start running again until 9:30 p.m., and all the customers were back down by 10:30 p.m., Blackwood said.

Blackwood told the paper that Wednesday's problem involved a clamp on the tram, and it took workers some time to diagnose the problem before they could climb up and fix it in the dark.

A person at the Sandia Peak Ski & Tramway told ABQjournal.com this morning that the tram was expected to begin running again today, but that the regular schedule was being delayed because of icing at the top.
