Time to haul out the galoshes. El Niño, the Pacific Ocean pattern linked to wet winters in the southwest, appears to be on its way back.
The Climate Prediction Center's monthly outlook, published this morning, calls for El Niño by this summer, though the real resulting action in our climate doesn't come 'round till fall and winter. El Niño features a warming of the equatorial Pacific and a shift in trans-ocean wind patterns that tends to pull the storm-brining jet stream down our way, increasing the odds of mountain snow here in New Mexico. Here's what CPC said: Current observations, recent trends, and the dynamical model forecasts indicate that conditions are favorable for a transition from ENSO-neutral to El Niño conditions during June - August 2009.
It's early for any kind of a firm forecast. The most the forecasters can say is that it shifts the odds toward the wet side of the scale.
