Tesla Motors, the electric car company that threw Albuquerque over for the bright lights of California, claims that it is actually profitable.
I claim no expertise in knowing whether Tesla's claim is credible (perhaps readers who know the issue better than I can share their wisdom in the comments), but here's what the company said in a statement issued today: Tesla Motors attained a significant milestone in July when it achieved overall corporate profitability with approximately $1 million of earnings on revenue of $20 million. Tesla reached overall corporate profitability while continuing to develop the all-electric Model S sedan and opening regional sales and service centers. Profitability arose primarily from improved gross margin on the Roadster 2, the second iteration of Tesla's award-winning sports car.
For the story of Tesla's love-'em-and-leave-'em affair with Albuquerque, see this Andrew Webb story.
