Residents of Socorro have been feeling a significant earthquake swarm for the last several days, with as many as 80 quakes detected.

"People are feeling them and hearing them," said Rick Aster, a geophysicist at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. So far there have been no reports of damage, Aster said.

Socorro is one of New Mexico's most active earthquake zones, sitting atop a major deep underground magma body. The quakes have been centered 3 to 4 miles deep, according to Aster. While quakes in Socorro are common, and they sometimes come in swarms, this is the biggest swarm in about a decade, he said.

The noise sounds like a "boom", Aster said.

Tech's seismologists are still going through the data on the quake swarm this morning. We'll have more as the story develops.
