Is H1N1 Already Past Its Peak in NM? Permalink comment E-mail

Google's flu tracker suggests H1N1 peaked in New Mexico in mid-October, and is declining.

That's the conclusion of an experimental tool developed by Google and epidemiologists that keeps track of people searching the Internet for information about flu symptoms. "We have found a close relationship between how many people search for flu-related topics and how many people actually have flu symptoms," Google explains.

They've got a U.S. map up, and if you click on New Mexico, you'll see a rapid rise in September, peaking in the first two weeks of October and declining since. This is not a perfect measure, but since we don't have perfect data on flu cases (the bane of my colleague Olivier Uyttebrouck's existence as he covers H1N1), this seems like a good starting point.
