The Detroit News reports on the discovery of a radioactive cheese grater at a Flint, Mich., scrap yard:
After sweeping the contents of the truck with hand-held scanners, workers traced the source to a run-of-the-mill, triangular-shaped grater. More specifically, the monitors showed the radioactivity located in the appliance's metal handle. "It is not uncommon for our radiation detectors to be activated by trace radioactive materials," said Emile Manhanti, a spokesman for Genesee Recycling. "Ninety-nine percent of the time, these sources turn out to be from innocuous and unregulated household or medical devices and substances." Manhanti said the low levels of radiation mean that the item posed no health threat.
