The unofficial election result tallies from Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District Tuesday night, plus a few interesting tidbits not found in the Journal's paper edition.
Before we get to the tallies, here are a few interesting facts about the election and campaigns: -- When Derrick Lente defeated Jimmy Wagner for the Sandoval County seat, it ended a more than 30-year Wagner family legacy. Wagner's father, Gus Wagner, held the seat for more than 20 years. Wagner had held it for eight before losing Tuesday. -- Sen. Dede Feldman, D-Albuquerque, campaigned for Bernalillo County winners Adrian Oglesby and Karen Dunning in races with huge voter turnouts compared to traditional district election numbers. Feldman said at MRGCD headquarters Tuesday that voter turnout could be attributed to some publicly aired fights over how the district uses Bernalillo County tax dollars. Feldman also sparred with the former board over a recreational trails program she secured state money for, but the board refused.
"I think it reflects the public debate about the role of the conservancy and the taxes we pay," she said about the turnout. -- Feldman's own get out the vote effort may have helped filling up the polls too. She offered free breakfast as an incentive for many voters to get their voices heard. -- Oglesby, a first time candidate for any office, said between himself, Dunning and Lente, it may have been the first "professionally" run campaigns the district had ever seen in an election. He said he was surprised at how much of a support structure came together. "To be honest, I was shocked at the amount of people working for me," he said. -- The four new members have replaced more than half the district board. Only Janet Jarratt of Valencia County, Augusta Meyers of Bernalillo County and at-large member Eugene Abeita remain on the board. All three of them will be up for election in two years. -- Now for the unofficial election results: Bernalillo County, board position 3: Karen Dunning, 1,753 votes, 62 percent; Bill Turner, 1,062 votes, 37 percent. Bernalillo County, board position 4: Adrian Oglesby, 1,609 votes, 55 percent; Jim Roberts, 1,282 votes, 44 percent. Socorro County, board position 6: Chris Sichler, 269 votes, 38 percent; Cecilia Rosacker-McCord, 172 votes, 24 percent; Joe M. Lopez, 134 votes, 19 percent; Glen Duggins, 122 votes, 17 percent. Sandoval County, board position 7: Derrick Lente, 1,168 votes, 70 percent; Jimmy Wagner, 491 votes, 29 percent. Just more than 50 provisional ballots still need to be counted. The results should be certified by Friday.
