In a novel approach to drum up enthusiasm to be an extra in the film "Paul," the movie is offering charities a chance to be part of the action. Universal Pictures and Working Title Films will donate money to a charity based on the number of people it brings to be background extras for a comic convention in the film. The more people the better for the scene, and the more money your favorite charity will earn.
"Paul" is a science-fiction film about a pair of science fiction fans who are traveling to the Comic-Con comic book convention. The movie stars Simon Pegg, who plays a young Scotty in the new "Star Trek" film, and Nick Frost. The pair worked together on the comic hits "Shaun of The Dead" and "Hot Fuzz." Register your nonprofit by calling Elizabeth Gabel at (505) 982-9681. "Breaking Bad" is trying a similar idea for its casting for some crowd scenes. The school booster club or charity that brings the most people to the shoot will earn $2,000. "Breaking Bad" is looking for people ages 14-20 for six hours on Aug. 14 at Highland High School, 3700 Coal SE. The show was canceled after just four weeks last fall, but the network still had episodes left in the can that weren't shown. The final unseen episodes will air at 7 p.m. Sundays on the CW in Albuquerque, Comcast Channel 19. The show stars Emmy-winner Laurie Metcalf - who many remember as Jackie Harris on the "Roseanne" TV show - as the head of the Buffkin family, which runs a short-term or payday-loan company. Albuquerque's Joe Peracchio, who was a star with the Tricklock Theatre Company, plays a major role in the series. "Easy Money" is engrossing. The show follows the lives of a, shall we say, morally ambiguous family as it makes money hand over fist in the short-term loan business. The cast of characters who come in to get loans make for comedy and drama, often as the Buffkin clan tries to collect on bad debts. "Easy Money" was filmed in Albuquerque at the old Phillips Semiconductor plant and many of the background scenes are set in Albuquerque.
