Your Generosity Will Ease Difficult Days for Theft Victim
Audio of "Annie's" phone call as noted in June 27 and June 29 column.
I suppose I could say I’m surprised by your generosity, but in fact I’m not. I’ve been in this position before, watching people in this community freely lending a hand to someone who needed it. Not long ago, I got involved in an Army major’s effort to help a school in Baghdad, and by the time the Albuquerque community was through responding, we had to hire professionals to pack up everything you donated. Thief Stole Purse, Sense of Safety
Early in the afternoon of a warm summer day, Annie lost $300 and the illusion of safety, the illusion we all operate under, the expectation of routine, the sense that everything around us is as it should be, as it always is. (Friday, June 27, 2008)

Family, City Rise Above Swastika Graffiti
When you consider all that has preceded the threadbare cliché now embedded in the stucco on the front of Mikey Weinstein's house, it's something of a surprise that it took this long to happen. (Wednesday, June 18, 2008)
Getting Older Is No Picnic
I've added another item to the age list, not that I'm writing any of it down. I'm not shipping a record of it over to an external hard drive or sending it out to Google Docs or even texting it to somebody I think might be interested in my aches and pains. (Sunday, June 8, 2008)
Obama's Run Stirs Hope, Pride
"My mother used to tell me when I was 6 years old (in 1921), when people ask you what you're going to be when you grow up, tell them you're going to be the first Negro president of the United States. I worked up the courage to say it a few times, talking through my hat or somebody else's hat. And now here's the fulfillment of it, in my lifetime." John Hope Franklin, 93, renowned historian, quoted in The Washington Post. (Friday, June 6, 2008)
Those Who Wrote Politely, Thanks
Last week, I wrote of the yearbook controversy in Clovis. Two students, neither gay and each professing to hold strong Christian beliefs, included gay couples with straight couples in the Clovis High School yearbook. (Sunday, June 1, 2008)

Youths Will Win Gay Argument
My money is on the Clovis young'uns. Not all of them, of course. Nothing is ever 100 percent. But I'm betting there's a slowly emerging majority, just as there is in other Clovises around the land. (Wednesday, May 28, 2008)
