Hydro Project Gets
$4.5M in Funding
New Mexico will receive up to $4.56 million in funding for an upgrade to a hydropower project as part of $30.6 million in Recovery Act funding for seven such projects announced by the Department of Energy on Wednesday.
Los Alamos County will get the money to add a low-flow turbine/generator to the 13.8 MW hydroelectric plant in Abiquiu, increasing the total plant capacity by 3 MW and allowing the dam to operate when releases are below or above the capacity of the two existing turbines.
The upgrade will increase annual generation by 6,462 MWh or a 22 percent increase, DOE said.
The project's environmental benefits include higher dissolved oxygen content in downstream water and increased minimum flows.
4 Eastern Counties
Get Emergency Aid
CLOVIS Four eastern New Mexico counties have been declared eligible for disaster assistance due to their proximity to Texas counties that are disaster areas due to drought and other problems.
Farmers and ranchers in Lea, Curry, Quay and Roosevelt counties can apply for low-interest emergency loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency.
U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., says farmers and ranchers in the four counties have been economically affected by severe weather this year.
Marriott Suites
Builds in Farmington
FARMINGTON - Scheduled to open in January, the four-story, 117-room Marriott TownePlace Suites under construction on East Main Street will offer extended-stay hotel amenities unlike any available in Farmington. The hotel is hoping to cater to the area's business travelers, particularly by offering larger rooms that feature full kitchens.
The location is ideal because of its walking distance to a grocery store, several popular restaurants, the mall and other shopping centers.
