Political shift leaves many without voices
Many among the electorate have recently proclaimed the election of Mr. Obama to be an act of God. Since that sort of thinking goes beyond the realm of reason, I hope the wild adoration will soon be replaced by sober thought.
I congratulate the Obama camp for a well run campaign and a great victory. However, I caution the new incumbents about the lopsided nature of this great swing to the left.
Our democracy is based on the principle of consent through compromise. When the pendulum swings too far left or right many unfavorable circumstances come to be. For example our own state (New Mexico) has now swung too far left with the very weak opposition unable to force compromise. In other words, a major part of the population are left with no effective representation, and are therefore extremely vulnerable.
Now the majority of incumbents are indebted to campaign supporters from the far left such as trial lawyers, labor unions, influential ethnic groups and organizations such as AARP. Whereas business, ranching, farming, non-union workers, religious groups and non-minority ethnics are left without an effective voice in government. Therefore, no way to force compromise.
Historically, we have seen a similar situation in the south where one party rule held sway for many years. We all know how that played out: rampant corruption, segregation and poverty on one side, with wealth and privileges on the other.
In our state most of the tax paying producers are on the right while most of our government social programs favor the left. The question is, "How far can the politicians push this imbalance without doing major harm to the economy?"
In past years we could count on an unbiased, balanced news media to step in and energize the public to force fairness in government! Now the media cannot be trusted to exercise their constitutional mandates because a majority of their members have chosen partisanship over honesty.

        Commentary wasn't suitable to print
I read with interest the "guest commentary" of Mr. Danny Jarrett, local managing partner of national ... law firm Jackson Lewis, LLP. With programs such as "How to Stay Union-Free," Jackson Lewis advises employers in the legal ... techniques that are meant to mislead employees to believe that jobs are at risk if union organization occurs.
My advice to your readers, employers and employees alike, is to please do a little research about Jackson Lewis and their costly tactics ....
As to the Business Outlook's publication of this ... commentary ... shame on you. You are reducing this paper to the level of one of those local, sloppily produced business rags.
