Contemporary Competition

Journal Staff Report
Three New Mexico architectural firms — responsible, respectively, for mixed-use studios, an elementary school and a single-family home — share this year's Jeff Harnar Award for Contemporary Architecture and its $10,000 prize.
The award, for work that exemplifies the best contemporary architecture, went to:
Christopher Calott and Thomas Gifford of the Calott & Gifford Archictecture/Urban Design for the mixed-use Richmond Street Studios in Albuquerque's Nob Hill. Judges said it demonstrated appropriate and artistic responses to the challenges of the site, client, program and budget.
Mark Baker of Baker Architecture & Design for APS' Duranes Elementary School Kindergarten and Classroom Building. Judges noted its good response to challenges.
Kramer Woodard, Natalie Du and Sergio Velliro of Kramer Woodard for Lot K, a 2,627-square-foot, single-family dwelling on a hilltop in the Spruce Hill neighborhood. Judges expressed admiration for the innovative design in an infill urban context and its low cost.
“It's been our hope from the outset of this competition to highlight contemporary architecture from New Mexico,” said Garrett Thornburg, head of the Thornburg Charitable Foundation.
