PRC: 9 Insurers Selling Illegally

Journal Staff Report
The state Public Regulation Commission's Insurance Division has issued a consumer alert warning about nine companies that are offering health insurance products without proper authorization.
The companies in questions are: Real Benefits Association; Real Benefits Association Employee Welfare Plan Trust; American Trade Association Inc.; Serve America; Serve America Assurance LTD; Beema Insurance Group; Perfect Health of N.Y.; Smart Data Solutions LLC; and Health Allies Inc.
Those businesses are neither licensed nor do they have the authority to sell health insurance or limited medical plans within the state, the insurance division said in a news release.
New Mexico Insurance Superintendent Morris "Mo" Chavez said it appears that only a few New Mexicans have been affected so far.
"As of today, there are only a couple of consumers ... who've fallen prey to this scam and we will be vigilant in our efforts to make sure that the negative impact is minimized," Chavez said.
Consumers should not respond to unsolicited solicitations or offers for health insurance-related products over the Internet until they are certain that company is licensed, Chavez said.
Consumers can consult www.nmprc.state.nm.us to determine which companies are licensed within the state.
Anyone with information regarding the aforementioned companies – including those who've been contacted directly – is asked to contact John Gaherty at the NMPRC's Insurance Division at 505-827-4439 or by e-mail at john.gaherty@state.nm.us.
