AROUND NEW MEXICO
Journal Wire Reports
MVD Offering New Online Service
SANTA FE — New Mexico's Motor Vehicle Division has a new feature on its Web site that lets people who have been issued paper driver's licenses check the status of their permanent licenses and identification cards online.
New Mexico began using a new secure license process in April 2008 to protect against identity theft and other security concerns. Drivers get a temporary paper license, valid for 45 days, when they apply for a new license or identification card or renew an existing one.
The MVD then runs the customer information through a security check to ensure there are no driving violations and that the person has valid insurance. It usually takes about two weeks to get the permanent license or identification card in the mail.
N.M. Reps To Push Fast Mine Cleanups
Clean up of more than 130 old uranium mine and mill sites around New Mexico could be fast-tracked under federal legislation introduced by New Mexico's three congressmen.
Reps. Harry Teague, Ben Ray Lujan and Martin Heinrich have proposed legislation that would make funds available under the Surface Mine and Reclamation Act for the remediation of uranium sites.
If the bill passes, it would make more than $14 million available for cleaning up New Mexico sites.
Governor Inks Deal With Sonora, Mexico
SANTA FE — New Mexico and the Mexican state of Sonora have signed an agreement that details how the two states can work together on issues of health, tourism, security, education and economic development.
Gov. Bill Richardson chaired the inaugural meeting of the New Mexico Sonora Commission on Friday in Santa Fe. He and Sonoran Gov. Guillermo Pades Elias signed the agreement at the end of the meeting.
The governors accepted recommendation from the commission to bring together academic and research institutions through exchanges of teachers and students.
They also approved an effort to survey the New Mexico-Sonora border region for infectious disease.
