Border Conference a Hit
Journal Staff Report
SUNLAND PARK – A record 700 attendees and 300 companies/organizations participated in the 2009 NAFTA Institute/Supplier Meet the Buyer Conference, which took place last week.
“The NAFTA Institute/Supplier Meet the Buyer Conference has grown into the largest trade conference on the entire U.S.-Mexico border. In spite of all the economic challenges our record attendance this year shows that the border is still open for business,” New Mexico Economic Development Secretary Fred Mondragón said.
The conference has become a major part of New Mexico's strategy to develop a local supplier base for Mexico's maquiladora (twin plant) industry, which purchases and imports billions of dollars worth of supplies, organizers said.
The event was organized by the N.M. Economic Development's Office of Mexican Affairs, the International Business Accelerator, the North American Institute, the Mesilla Valley Economic Development Alliance, City of Juarez, the N.M. Small Business Development Network, and Western New Mexico University.
Topical experts from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico spoke about the various aspects of conducting cross-border business, including Foxconn's San Jeronimo project, Union Pacific's southern New Mexico rail project, and Mexico's Punta Colonet Port project. For more information, visit www.nmiba.com.
