Cruces Delays Opening of New City Hall
Las Cruces Sun-News
LAS CRUCES The opening of the new Las Cruces City Hall has been delayed a month until February so contractor Jaynes Corp. can install $450,000 worth of new cameras, microphones and flat-screen televisions that will be used to broadcast, and Web cast, public meetings.
The Las Cruces City Council this week approved a change order in the construction of the $26 million-plus municipal building that means plans to move into the facility will be pushed back to Feb. 16, at the earliest, from the original date of Jan. 11.
The change order, unanimously approved by the seven-member council, will allow Jaynes to install audio and visual equipment and Internet technologies specifically intended for the city Public Information Office.
Udell Vigil, city director of communications, said $450,000 from the city's Capital Improvement Reserve fund will be used. The televised meetings “would also include joint meetings between the council and (Doña Ana) County Commission and the (Las Cruces Public) School Board,” Vigil said.
Vigil added that cameras now being used to show public meetings at the current City Hall, at 200 N. Church St., have become outdated. Also, new equipment for the TV control room at the new City Hall, at 700 N. Main St., will be needed.
Flat-screen televisions will be installed in the lobby and an 8-foot-by-13-foot retractable screen will also be installed inside the new council chambers.
