Chamber Honors Kirtland for Business Commitment

      An entire Air Force base is among this year's winners of the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce's Volunteer Recognition Awards.
       Kirtland AFB was given the Honorary Lifetime Membership Award for demonstrating a strong commitment over an extended period of time to the chamber and its mission.
       “Kirtland is being recognized for their commitment to and involvement with the chamber and the business community we represent. They are a collaborative partner with the business community and community at large,” the chamber said in a news release.
       The awards are “our way of saying thank you for a job well done,” said Don Chalmers, chairman of the chamber's Board of Directors and president of Don Chalmers Ford.
        The other volunteer awards and recipients were:
       n Chairman's Award for Excellence – Ron Stern, president & CEO, Lovelace Health Systems; and Chief Ray Schultz, Albuquerque Police Department.
       n Excellence in Education Award – state Rep. Rhonda King.
       n Business Advocate in Politics – state Sen. John Arthur Smith.
       n Media Business Leadership Award – Kent Walz, editor, Albuquerque Journal.
       n Small Business Member of the Year – Bill Miera, CEO, Fiore Industries.
       n Small Business Advocate of the Year – Finance New Mexico.
       n Board Member Rookie of the Year – Gretchen Kok, National Dance Institute of N.M.
       The awards were scheduled to be presented at the chamber's board meeting Thursday evening.
       “These individuals and organizations have set themselves apart through their commitment to the community and state,” said Terri Cole, chamber president and CEO. “They overcome obstacles and rise to the challenge for the greater good. They meet difficulty head on and this place is better because of them.”
