Ask the Bugman with Richard Fagerlund
With winter coming, fortify castle against bugs
Q: We seem to be having more bugs now that winter is getting close. Is there anything we can do to prevent them from coming in the house this winter? — P.G., Albuquerque   (Saturday, November 14, 2009)

Frontline is a pesticide, and therefore, not 'safe'
Q: Even if we can agree to disagree about the fleas, (Frontline) is still a very valuable product that is used to treat other parasites that are very much a problem in New Mexico, such as ticks. As I read your article, I get the impression that Frontline is not safe, and that is just not the case. — B.M., Albuquerque   (Saturday, October 31, 2009)

Yes, N.M. has fleas, but don't resort to pesticide
Q: Why are you writing about New Mexico not having a flea problem? I am a veterinarian in Gallup, and I often see cats with fleas. I don't want you to write about not using Frontline anymore. — Veterinarian in Gallup   (Saturday, October 17, 2009)

Pets, owner probably not scratching from fleas
Q: I rescued a cat and took her into my home. Now, I think I have fleas. My dog and I are both scratching more than we usually do. I have ordered both feline and canine Frontline flea/tick control from PetMeds, which should arrive soon, but that doesn't solve the problem of my bed, the furniture, the carpets, and/or the feeling that I have "things" crawling on me and in my hair. — DM, Albuquerque   (Saturday, October 03, 2009)

Know Your Beetles Before Treating for Them
Q: We recently had a termite inspection, and the inspector said we have powder post beetles in the joists under our house. He quoted quite a bit to treat for them. Would we have powder post beetles under our house? I thought only termites could damage the wood. — P.L., Los Lunas   (Saturday, September 19, 2009)

Best To Avoid Spiders, Snakes
Q: My son and daughter-in-law live in a rural area that has both rattlesnakes and black widows, along with a lot of other pests. Which of the two is most dangerous? I have heard that the spider is more dangerous than the snake. Is that true? — P.K., Moriarty   (Saturday, September 05, 2009)

Getting rid of termites means doing it right way
Q: When we bought our house three years ago the Realtor arranged for a termite inspection and treatment with Premise (active ingredient Imidalcloprid) and a three-year guarantee. The three years is almost up, and I would like to know if renewing the guarantee is a good idea. According to research I've done, 97 percent of houses treated with Premise remain termite free for seven years or more. Would I be just as well off to pay for an annual or biannual inspection and then treat if necessary? — C.G., Albuquerque   (Saturday, August 22, 2009)

Home buyers should get thorough bug inspection
Q: We just moved here from Minnesota and we are buying a home. Someone recommended getting a termite inspection. Is it necessary in New Mexico? — J.W., Albuquerque   (Saturday, August 08, 2009)

Poisons not the solution for ridding house of mice
Q: We have a severe, ongoing mouse infestation. Pest control people have told me I have deer mice, while others told me I have field mice and one said I have house mice. I have no idea what I have. They all wanted to put out poisons, which I prefer not to use. Can you give me some information on the mice in the area so I know what I am dealing with? — B.K., Albuquerque   (Saturday, July 25, 2009)

Studies show that Roundup poses health risks
Q: We use Roundup for weeds on our commercial property. You have written before that it isn't good for you. Is this just opinion or is there evidence to support your statements? — G.H., Albuquerque   (Saturday, July 11, 2009)
