A Conversation with Vertamae Grosvenor - Everybody Eats: The History of African American Cuisine
Bank of America Theater, National Hispanic Cultural Center, 1701 4th Street NW
Grosvenor is the author of Vibration Cooking, also known as The Travel Notes of a Geechee Girl. The cookbook, originally published in 1970, is an autobiographical culinary cookbook, and documents her accession from the dusty roads of South Carolina to the bright lights of Paris, Italy, and other European countries, and later, to the Black Arts Movement of New York City. Through her experiences, Grosvenor uses the universal palate of adventure to introduce the reader to people, places, rituals, and international culinary delights. Immediately following the lecture, there will be a panel discussion with some New Mexico restaurant owners and the winners of the First Annual Sweet Potato Pie contest will be announced and awarded prizes. A dessert reception (featuring all of the sweet potato pies entered into the contest) will follow in the lobby.

An Inquisitive Eye, Seeing Into Prints
Center of Art Building #62, 1 University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM 87131
An Inquisitive Eye provides visitors an occasion to view significant prints and printed books from the museum’s permanent collection which numbers over ten thousand, and spans the history of printmaking from 1493 to the present. Prints possess a multi-valent nature—both the subject and technique embodied in an image must be considered on equal footing, one not privileged over the other. The idea expressed on paper depends upon the printer’s abilities and particular materials to realize successfully the artist’s vision. Woodcuts from the Weltchronik (World Chronicle), Albrecht Dürer and Wassily Kandinsky, etchings by Rembrandt van Rijn, Man Ray and William Kentridge, lithographs by Honoré Daumier, George Grosz, and Robert Motherwell and screenprints by Andy Warhol, Agnes Martin and Matthew Barney illustrate the extent of the exhibition and the breadth of the museum’s collection which continues to serve as an important research and teaching resource for the university and the community at-large.

Clarifying Meditative Work - A Fresh Look
    Wat, 145 Madison NE, Albuquerque
A workshop, “Clarifying Meditative Work – A Fresh Look”, will be held on Saturday, 2/11, 2 to 5 pm at the Wat Center, at 145 Madison NE, corner of Madison and Copper, east of Washington in Albuquerque. It is also ok to leave at 3:45. $2 donation. The workshop will bring together people interested in meditation from any tradition - including Tibetan, Zen, Vipassana, Hindu and Western – as well as people meditating without any traditional context. The spirit of the day should appeal to people who like the writings of Eckhart Tolle, Pema Chodron, Toni Packer, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Krishnamurti, among others. Both experienced sitters and those newly interested in meditation will have a chance to explore directly what meditative work is and how it sheds light on the concerns of our lives. The workshop will not focus on the learning of either techniques or spiritual theory, although it will be fine if these topics come up for discussion. Instead participants can bring up issues and concerns in their lives or issues from or about their meditation. The group will explore the possibility of shedding fresh light on these issues, not theoretically, but from a quiet, meditative listening to each other and to oneself. The day will include quiet sitting, group discussion, a short talk and some time to visit with each other. The facilitator is Jay Cutts, who has attended retreats with Toni Packer for over 35 years. Jay meets from time to time with people from diverse backgrounds to clarify meditative work together. Jay says, “Meditative work is, in its deepest sense, not theoretical, not goal oriented, not a matter of time or progress. It is the direct opening, fully complete in this moment now, to a simple, compassionate, open awareness that allows the myriad fears, clingings, confusions of the mind that we all suffer from to be revealed in a new way and at the same time brings us intimately, undividedly and lovingly in touch with the wide universe in all its profound stillness. I feel that, in our deepest hearts, it is the possibility of this openness that we come together to clarify.” For reservations or more info, or to be on the mailing list for future workshops, please call Jay at 281-0684. Additional workshops on 3/17 and 4/21. . There is a seven day silent retreat the first week of December, which is conducted in the same tradition-neutral way, on 10 quiet acres in Tijeras. www.cuttsreviews.com/meditation/

“Hiroshi Sugimoto” exhibition at UNM Art Museum
UNM Art Museum in Center of Art Builiding #62, 1 University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM 87131
HIROSHI SUGIMOTO is the first one-person exhibition in New Mexico of this internationally acclaimed master of photography. Organized by museum director, E. Luanne McKinnon, the show provides a focused overview of five of Mr. Sugimoto’s (b. 1948, Tokyo, Japan) best-known projects which emphasize the characteristics of time, light, space, movement + form – the very nature of reality itself. Selected works will be on view in the Van Deren Coke Gallery including the “Dioramas,” photographed in exquisite life-like detail at natural history and other museums; “Seascapes”, timeless vistas of air and water photographed at oceans from around the world; “Theatres,” for which he set the exposure time of his camera to the entire length of the film that was being shown; “Lightning Fields,” produced in the studio from experiments with electricity; and, “Mechanical Forms,” exquisitely detailed 19th century tools, the choice of which was highly influenced by the artist’s interest in Marcel Duchamp’s The Large Glass (1915-1923). The exhibition has been organized with the generous cooperation of the Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco and courtesy of the artist.
