2010-02-09 at 7:30 PMStep Afrika!Popejoy Hall - UNMStep Afrika! is the first professional company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping. Stepping is a unique dance tradition that grew out of the song and dance rituals practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities in the early 1900s. In stepping, the body is used as an instrument to create intricate rhythms and sounds through a combination of footsteps, claps and spoken word. African-based communities have a long and rich tradition of using movement, words and sounds to communicate their allegiance to a group. Step Afrika! reaches tens of thousands of Americans each year and has performed on many stages in North & South America, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. Step Afrika!’s performance on the evening of February 9th will trace the roots of stepping from it’s origins in African tribal and mining communities to it’s current form today. February 9th, 2010 at 7:30 PM in the University of New Mexico’s Popejoy Hall. 2 Free tickets per valid UNM ID (at bookstore box office only) or public tickets are $7.50 and on sale now at the UNM Bookstore Ticket Office or www.unmtickets.com. 2010-02-12 at 5:00 PMSloane Bibb Heart of Dixie Meet the Artist Show662 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, NM 87501On Feb 12th, 2010 at Lakind Fine Art Gallery, Canyon Road, Santa Fe will get its first taste of an emerging voice from the South through Sloane Bibb’s latest collection, The Heart of Dixie. The show will premier at 662 Canyon Road at Lakind Fine Art Gallery on February 9th through the 23rd, with the artist in attendance at a reception on Friday, February 12th from 5 to 7:30PM. Part painting, part assemblage, part cultural tableau, the eclectic grouping is quirky, profoundly moving, and heartbreaking. Like all his work, the soul of The Heart of Dixie is texture. “I began doing this multi-layered style on canvas, using mainly paint, old paper and beeswax. I then added wood canvases, and incorporated metal and found objects, to become more 3D.” The result is a thought-provoking collection that captures all the cultural complexity and duality of his native Alabama. “There’s a constant push-pull between romance and reality in my life,” said Bibb. “Life, art, family, work, creation, commerce. I think that tension is always present in my art. But with Valentine’s Day coming, and frankly with everything that’s going on the world, I really pushed myself to explore the interplay of happiness tinged with sadness in this collection,” Bibb said. “Plus, I just love that it’s sharing my heart—my love and connection and understanding of this place I call home—with the heart of the Southwest.” The show will be held at 662 Canyon Road at Lakind Fine Art Gallery on February 9th through the 23rd, with the artist in attendance at a reception on Friday, February 12th from 5 to 7:30PM. 2010-02-27 at 2:00 PMClarifying Meditative Work - A Fresh LookWat Center, 145 Madison NE, AlbuquerqueA workshop, “Clarifying Meditative Work – A Fresh Look”, will be held on Saturday, 2/27 , 2 to 5 pm at the Wat Center, at 145 Madison NE, corner of Madison and Copper, east of Washington in Albuquerque. It is also ok to leave at 3:45. $2 donation. Also on 9/26. The workshop will bring together people interested in meditation from any tradition - including Tibetan, Zen, Vipassana, Hindu and Western – as well as people meditating without any traditional context. The spirit of the day should appeal to people who like the writings of Eckhart Tolle, Pema Chodron, Toni Packer, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Krishnamurti, among others. Both experienced sitters and those newly interested in meditation will have a chance to explore directly what meditative work is and how it sheds light on the concerns of our lives. The workshop will not focus on the learning of either techniques or spiritual theory, although it will be fine if these topics come up for discussion. Instead participants can bring up issues and concerns in their lives or issues from or about their meditation. The group will explore the possibility of shedding fresh light on these issues, not theoretically, but from a quiet, meditative listening to each other and to oneself. The day will include quiet sitting, group discussion, a short talk and some time to visit with each other. The facilitator is Jay Cutts, who has attended retreats with Toni Packer for over 35 years. Jay meets from time to time with people from diverse backgrounds to clarify meditative work together. Jay says, “Meditative work is, in its deepest sense, not theoretical, not goal oriented, not a matter of time or progress. It is the direct opening, fully complete in this moment now, to a simple, compassionate, open awareness that allows the myriad fears, clingings, confusions of the mind that we all suffer from to be revealed in a new way and at the same time brings us intimately, undividedly and lovingly in touch with the wide universe in all its profound stillness. I feel that, in our deepest hearts, it is the possibility of this openness that we come together to clarify.” For reservations or more info, or to be on the mailing list for future workshops, please call Jay at 281-0684. Additional workshop on 3/20. There is a seven day silent retreat December, which is conducted in the same tradition-neutral way, on 10 quiet acres in Tijeras. www.cuttsreviews.com/meditation/ — NM Center for Meditative Inquiry and Retreat

2010-03-20 at 2:00 PMClarifying Meditative Work - A Fresh LookWat Center, 145 Madison NE, AlbuquerqueA workshop, “Clarifying Meditative Work – A Fresh Look”, will be held on Saturday, 3/20 , 2 to 5 pm at the Wat Center, at 145 Madison NE, corner of Madison and Copper, east of Washington in Albuquerque. Additional workshop in April. There is a seven day silent retreat December, which is conducted in the same tradition-neutral way, on 10 quiet acres in Tijeras. www.cuttsreviews.com/meditation/ — NM Center for Meditative Inquiry and Retreat-

In this full-day workshop, learn how to develop each of these elements and how to weave them together. March 27, 9:30 am to 3:00 pm, $39. - 2010-04-09 at 6:30 PMCaravan to peaceKimo TheaterCaravan to Peace will be held at the historic KiMo Theater in downtown Albuquerque on Friday, April 9, 2010. The event features the world premiere screening of an inspiring documentary-Stealing the Light-and a concert by world-renowned oud virtuoso Rahim Al-Haj. For VIP ticket holders, the reception with Afghani food and an opportunity to meet filmmaker Aimie Burns, Rahim Al-Haj and Dr. Mohammad Khan Kharoti starts at 6:00pm. The main event will begin at 7:00pm. Stealing the Light chronicles the work of Dr. Mohammad Khan Kharoti who founded Green Village Schools in 2001 as a means to lasting peace and democracy by providing quality secular education to girls and boys in war-torn Afghanistan. The main compound with more than 1,200 students was reduced to rubble by gunmen in October 2008. The gunmen stole every book, chalkboard, and desk, and tore the school down beam by beam, brick by brick until nothing was left. Founded in 2007, Project PeacePal is an international peace through education organization striving to create the next generation of leaders and peace builders through friendships and the application of peace building skills in daily life. Project PeacePal and Green Village Schools are collaborating to continue Dr. Kharoti's courageous project. A photo exhibit featuring the children of Green Village Schools and a silent auction will round out the evening. Your attendance will help us rebuild the school and restore the light that was stolen from the children of Afghanistan.
