Ancient Petroglyph Rock Images photographed by Walter Wollert
The black basalt rock of the West Mesa escarpment is not only evidence of the geologic events that have shaped the unique place we call Albuquerque, but it is also the canvas on which the Native Americans of the Middle Rio Grande Valley chose to render their rock images and prayers to the earth. Walter Wollert uses digital techniques to “immerse the viewer into these local images,” and to “draw the viewers into feeling they were there.” He has taken care to show not only the beauty of the geometric rock image, but also to render the surrounding scene with his unique eye.
Come participate in our continued partnership with the natural world.

HALEY HASLER Solo Show
130 Lincoln Ave. Suite f, Santa Fe, NM 87501EVOKE Contemporary introduces an exhibition of paintings by Haley Hasler on November 6th with an opening reception 5pm – 8pm. The exhibition runs through November 30. Hasler will be in attendance to unveil her meticulously detailed self-portraits which are elaborately conceived narratives on truth, illusion and identity. Drawing upon Renaissance compositions, Hasler herself is the central figure that presents her audience with all the details of contrived circumstance. Many of Hasler’s scenes pose a frenetic level of activity with obsessively detailed scenery and ‘set design’. With the artist ‘in character,’ the scene is set for theatrical illusion in which the heroine is master of her circumstances. In the artist’s words, “While the self-portrait implies that the artist is showing us the truth, a representation of the exterior in disguise conveys the impossibility and doubleness of this endeavor.”
“Through the seemingly private world of self-portraiture and autobiographical narrative, I hope to present a compelling fictive world, without dictating a precise narrative or relying on a static symbolism. I try to invest the figure with an iconic confrontability – making it operate both a self-portrait and archetypal heroine. At the same time, the narrative aspect of the work is meant to subvert the strictly iconic mode – once again, conveying the questionability of a painting’s claim to truth.
The theatrical aspect of my work is deliberate, to emphasize the painting’s connection with artifice and enactment. I conceive of a painting as a kind of theatre – a stage set for my characters and protagonists. Through the shallow, receding stage-like space, I wish to emphasize the unreality and illusion of a painting, which contradict its paradoxical appearance of reality.” Haley Hasler

Fusion – Mixed Media Prints by Suzanne Marshall
3812 Central Ave SE, 100 B. Albuquerque, NM; Upper Nob HillMarshall’s bold, semi-abstract etchings and gravures are torn, collaged, scorched and waxed to create visually seductive surfaces. Her images deal with the human proclivity to exploit the natural world with potential consequence of a ravaged environment. However, her point of view is that of an observer rather than of someone who points her finger at others. While Marshall’s work is thoughtful and slightly cynical it also infused with quirky elegance and uncommon beauty.

Everybody knows that bargain shopping in department stores these days is like having the cherry on the cake – it’s so easy to find sale items and bargains. But let’s not overlook the smaller stores and the antique collectives? Even the big box retailers offer quality and stylish fashion at great prices. In this group class you will learn:
• How to think outside the box of your traditional shopping patterns to find chic, unique fashion choices.
• To plan for your purchases instead of just hunting for the latest, greatest and cheapest.
• What it takes to be fashion savvy and bargain happy in a city without much fashion selection.
• How not to fall victim to fads and trends that cost you more (disposable fashion)
• To look for inexpensive (but quality) options for your working wardrobe.

Introduction to Reflexology
UNM Continuing EducationReflexology is based on the theory that our entire body is mirrored on the feet and hands by reflex points. When working the reflex points, we encourage energy and circulation to flow freely in our body. This takes oxygen and nutrition to all our cells, organs and glands. This encourages the body to heal itself and it helps the body to detox. UNM Continuing Education is offering an Introduction to Reflexology class on Saturday, November 7, 2009 from 9am-4pm. For $55 you will learn the history of reflexology. We will thoroughly go over the Foot Chart. You will learn what reflexology is and why it works, as well as the benefits of the work. By the end of class you will be accomplished in all the Relaxation techniques the instructor teaches. For more information please visit
www.dce.unm.edu or call 277-6320.

Explosions in the Sky: Should we Worry About Asteroids
University of New Mexico Regener HallExplosions in the Sky
Should we Worry About Asteroids
by
Dr. Mark Boslough
Principle Member of Technical Staff
Sandia Laboratories
It is often said that our atmosphere protects us from most asteroids. Very few are big enough to reach the ground without disintegrating. Crater-forming impacts are rare because there aren’t many space rocks sufficiently massive to pass through the atmosphere. But what about the asteroids that disintegrate? Do they really disappear harmlessly, without a trace, or have we been missing the geological evidence? In 1994 Dr. Boslough was a member of a team that gained international recognition for using a supercomputer to correctly predict the effects of the impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter.
Dr. Boslough will speak at the next general meeting of The Albuquerque Astronomical Society. The meeting will be held on November 7 at 7 p.m. in Regener Hall on the University of New Mexico Albuquerque Campus. For information, visit

FREE Community Academy Lecture: 300-Fact or Fiction?
Gardenhire Hall, Albuquerque Academy Campus300: Fact or Fiction? (presented by Dr. Rich Field)
* Did the Spartans at Thermopylae really fight without body armor? Was Xerxes Persian or African? Did the Spartans really kick the Persian messengers down a well? Why has this struggle been recorded as one of the most famous last stands in all of military history? Come and hear the story recounted by Herodotus of the second Persian War, as we contrast it with the glib manipulation and outright fantasies of Hollywood. We’ll talk about events leading up to the titanic clash at the “Hot Gates” and two decisive battles that followed close on its heels as well as contrast Spartan
military training and equipment with that of the Persian forces. If you’ve always wanted to learn more about the paradigmatic Spartan military duel, this lecture is for you!
* Richard Field has taught history at Albuquerque Academy since 1991 and senior humanities since 1995. He earned his Ph.D. at UNM in 1993, and his M.A. in the great books from St. John’s College in Santa Fe in 1998.
*** Register online at

Liquid Gypsy with special guests Stephanie Hatfield & Hot Mess
The Historic El Rey Theater, 622 Central Ave SW, Albuquerque, NMDoors open at 7:30 PM. Show starts at 8:00 PM.
Admission: $7.
Performers: Liquid Gypsy and Stephanie Hatfield & Hot Mess.
Liquid Gypsy is Albuquerque's premiere psychedelic rock band, playing a blend of original songs mixed with a healthy dose of their own "spin" on The Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic, The Allman Brothers Band, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, and others. Jam band and classic rock fans of all kinds will feel right at home on Liquid Gypsy's dance floor. Though heavily "dosed" with versions of some of your favorite tunes, the band has developed and mastered its own unique style of collaborating not only with one another, but also with their audience. Liquid Gypsy is guaranteed to keep you shakin' on Shakedown Street! The band can hardly wait to show off the new additions to the band and their mesmerizing light show. Liquid Gypsy is Scott Bruggeman (keys & vocals), Larry Jaramillo (guitar & vocals), Mike Druxman (bass & vocals), Steve Henao (drums), and the newest addition, Jacob Lowery, whom you may remember from Seth and Jacob (guitar).
Originally from the Detroit area, Stephanie Hatfield began singing in 3 different church choirs at the age of 8. Her first solo in front of a congregation of 200 began her life long passion for performing that has been evident to anyone who has heard her. Focusing primarily on classical music she began competing and performing which eventually led her to study classical performance at Michigan State University. Originally in pursuit of opera, she promptly fell in love with Jazz improv which began the second phase of her musical education. A move out West after college brought an expansion of musical experience including broadway, country, folk and rock. After compiling a collection of original music, Stephanie has been in the studio at Frogville to create her debut album with amazing musicians such as Matt McClinton (grunge rocker and amazing producer), Bill Palmer (Hundred Year Flood guitarist and Frogville engineer/producer), Jason Aspeslet (drummer of Trilobite, Zaduo, The Quartrio, and Bernadette Seacrest), Kevin Zoernig (keyboard genius) and Tommy Stephenson (keys for Tommy Bolin, Joe Walsh, Eric Clapton, The Eagles, and more).
This is a 21+ event.

Clarifying Meditative Work - A Fresh Look
Wat Temple, 145 Madison NE, Albuquerque (corner of Madison and Washington)A workshop, “Clarifying Meditative Work – A Fresh Look”, will be held on Saturday, 11/14 , 2 to 5 pm at the Wat Center, at 145 Madison NE, corner of Madison and Copper, east of Washington in Albuquerque. It is also ok to leave at 3:45. $2 donation.
..
The workshop will bring together people interested in meditation from any tradition - including Tibetan, Zen, Vipassana, Hindu and Western – as well as people meditating without any traditional context. The spirit of the day should appeal to people who like the writings of Eckhart Tolle, Pema Chodron, Toni Packer, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Krishnamurti, among others.
..
Both experienced sitters and those newly interested in meditation will have a chance to explore directly what meditative work is and how it sheds light on the concerns of our lives.
..
The workshop will not focus on the learning of either techniques or spiritual theory, although it will be fine if these topics come up for discussion. Instead participants can bring up issues and concerns in their lives or issues from or about their meditation. The group will explore the possibility of shedding fresh light on these issues, not theoretically, but from a quiet, meditative listening to each other and to oneself.
..
The day will include quiet sitting, group discussion, a short talk and some time to visit with each other. The facilitator is Jay Cutts, who has attended retreats with Toni Packer for over 35 years. Jay meets from time to time with people from diverse backgrounds to clarify meditative work together.
..
Jay says, “Meditative work is, in its deepest sense, not theoretical, not goal oriented, not a matter of time or progress. It is the direct opening, fully complete in this moment now, to a simple, compassionate, open awareness that allows the myriad fears, clingings, confusions of the mind that we all suffer from to be revealed in a new way and at the same time brings us intimately, undividedly and lovingly in touch with the wide universe in all its profound stillness. I feel that, in our deepest hearts, it is the possibility of this openness that we come together to clarify.”
..
For reservations or more info, or to be on the mailing list for future workshops, please call Jay at 281-0684. There is a seven day silent retreat Nov. 30 to Dec. 6, which is conducted in the same tradition-neutral way, on 10 quiet acres in Tijeras.

Virtual Reality® and Virtuésse® LIVE IN ALBUQUERQUE
VIRTUAL REALITY HAIR SOLUTIONS, 9226-B Menaul Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112Virtual Reality® and Virtuésse®, the brands behind instant hair transformation and hair loss solutions, will host the Virtual Reality® and Virtuésse® Live event at Virtual Reality Hair Solutions in Albuquerque, New Mexico, offering complimentary expert advice and hair makeovers for men and women experiencing hair loss.
On Friday, November 20th, and Saturday, November 21st, certified salon professionals will offer local Albuquerque-area men and women who are suffering from hair loss – due to medical or genetic conditions – a life-changing experience. New and existing clients can come into the salon for complimentary consultations and even hair transformations or makeovers.
Due to cost and limited availability, Virtual Reality and Virtuesse have previously only been accessible to Hollywood’s elite—now the processes are available to men and women across the country. Virtual Reality and Virtuesse work by applying an invisible, non-surgical, synthetic "second skin" called Dermalens™ (similar to a contact lens), into which human hair is inserted, compatible in color, density, curl pattern and texture to your own hair. Unlike a hairpiece, Virtual Reality and Virtuesse become part of you – not something you wear. The result is a virtual miracle hair restoration that instantly revives a youthful appearance and looks completely natural.
The average appointment takes about an hour and delivers a transformative, effective solution for men and women suffering from hair loss that lasts four weeks.

Black Friday with BlindDryve, Sketches in Black, Voyeur, and Traveler in Pain
The Historic El Rey Theater, 622 Central Ave SW, Albuquerque, NMReady to blow off some steam after Thanksgiving?
BlindDryve is an alternative metal band originally formed through a victory in the 104.7 The Edge Ultimate Band contest. Only two original members remain; Chris Sandoval and Daniel Gonzales. The two newest members are Jimmy J. Medina and Kirk Kapple. BlindDryve has a very original sound and song writing style that range anywhere from "old school thrash" to "new age metal" offering an intense, energetic live performance and addictive, adrenaline-pumping music. BlindDryve has recently released a full-length studio album, "World Insane." The album (and this Black Friday performance) is sure to surprise and leave you craving more!
It took a few months for Sketches in Black to finally come together as a band, but now that they're here, they're never looking back! They all have a wide variety of musical tastes and influences that span across the decades. From Frank Sinatra to Pantera you're bound to hear a roller coaster of melodies and harmonies in their songs. They believes in the "old" style of music of meaningful lyrics, solos, multiple chord changes, and also the new of heavy distortion and the thumping bass drums that melt faces. This doesn't mean you wouldn't find Sketches in Black doing an acoustic show for fans or at an open mic night. Diversity is what they strive for and we just know you'll love their music no matter what you're into!
Coming all the way from El Paso, Voyeur offers living proof that there's more to the South than soul food, rebels and such. Voyeur is a band that stakes its artistry on its versatility and open-mindedness. Casting a wide net, Voyeur pulls in musical inspiration from a broad range of music and experiences and attempts to reinvent those inspirations into music that covers just as wide a range. Boredom takes a backseat when listening to Voyeur. With everything Voyeur has got going on, it's nearly impossible to take the time to stop and smell roses. But that's okay; Voyeur has bigger and better things than roses to concern itself with.
Traveler in Pain has been rocking New Mexico crowds for over ten years! The band offers a broad, diverse and entertaining musical experience time and time again. At times, the members have changed, as well as the musical content. However, the dedication, perseverance and the inspiration provided by the "family of pain" (fan base), have provided the opportunity to perform on a consistent basis to friends new and old. The band consists of Lance Sedillo, lead vocals and rhythm guitar, James Campbell Lead Guitar and back-up vocals, Todd Wilburn Drums and recording producer/engineer, and Tom Michaels Bass and backing vocals. To date, this is the most heavy (no, not another fat joke), diverse, and the busiest line-up. Traveler in Pain plays about three weekends a month between Albuquerque's favorite live hot spots, as well as occasional trips to play in Los Lunas. The band is hard at work at incorporating a bunch of new material into the set list to make the eleventh year rocking the best so far!
This is a 21+ event.

Gregory Alan Isakov
The Historic El Rey Theater, 622 Central Ave SW, Albuquerque, NMDoors open at 7:30 PM. Show starts at 8:00 PM.
Admission: $15 in advance. Service charge, facility fee, and/or handling fee may apply. $20 at the door.
Performers: Gregory Alan Isakov and Chatter.
Proudly presented by Puccini Productions and sponsored by Whole Foods Market and BikeABQ
A mysterious traveler is coming into town: a musician with an old soul and a lot of talent. Gregory Alan Isakov is a singer-songwriter whose poetry and melodies will take you to the stars.
Born in South Africa, Isakov’s family immigrated to the U.S. in opposition to the apartheid. "The experience instilled in me the feeling that life is quality not quantity based." Isakov was seven when they settled near Philadelphia, a time he describes as understandably challenging for the family, though he personally felt at home in his new multi-cultural environment. Since then, Isakov has been a roamer. "I’ve lived in so many different places; I don’t feel indigenous to anywhere."
Isakov feels an artistic kinship with folks like Kelly Joe Phelps (he admires his ability to merge heaviness with humor) as well as Brandy Carlile, who offered to sing and record parts of "This Empty Northern Hemisphere" at her studio. The pair also cut Leonard Cohen’s "One of Us Cannot Be Wrong," as a duet. Isakov co-produced the album at various locations with Jamie Mefford who also engineered and is credited with God Noises.
He’s accompanied throughout by his band, The Freight: Jen Gilleran (drums), Jeb Bows (violin) and Phil Parker (cello). Isakov plays guitars, banjo, piano and harmonica, among other instruments. "This Empty Northern Hemisphere" is Isakov’s latest album. On it he conjures the miracles and heartaches of day-to-day living, then transforms them into melodies, with a serious commitment to songcraft and musicianship.
Chatter will be opening for Isakov. Chatter is a local chamber ensemble that was founded in 2003 by David Felberg, violinist, and Eric Walters, cellist. The group was formed in order provide opportunities in Albuquerque to hear 20th and 21st century musical works for chamber ensemble and chamber orchestra. In addition to its unique repertoire, Chatter contributes to New Mexico’s cultural life by employing the area’s finest professional musicians, whose individual artistry is honored by programming solo works. Chatter is also committed to young musicians, frequently featuring members of the Albuquerque Youth Symphony in side-by-side performances.
Advance tickets are available for $15 at Bookworks, Encore Music, Birdland, over the phone at 1-866-I-GET-TIX (1-866-443-8849), and online at GetTix.net. Service charge, facility fee, and/or handling fee may apply. You can also purchase tickets at the door the day of the show for $20.
This is a 21+ event, but because it will be fun for all ages, persons under 21 will be admitted with a parent or legal guardian.

Clarifying Meditative Work - An Extended Retreat
Tijeras, NMA one to seven day silent retreat, “Clarifying Meditative Work – An Extended Retreat”, will be held from Sunday, 11/29 to Sunday, 12/6 on ten quiet acres in Tijeras, just outside of Albuquerque. Fees range from $50 to $230, depending on the number of days you come. It is alright to come for one day or more. Advance registration is required.
The retreat will bring together people interested in meditation from any tradition - including Tibetan, Zen, Vipassana, Hindu and Western – as well as people meditating without any traditional context.
The spirit of the retreat should appeal to people who enjoy the writings of Pema Chodron, Toni Packer, Thich Nhat Hanh, Eckhart Tolle, Byron Katie and Krishnamurti, among others.
Both experienced sitters and those newly interested in meditation will have a chance to explore directly what meditative work is and how it sheds light on the concerns of our lives. The retreat does not focus on teaching techniques or spiritual theory, although it will be fine if these topics come up for discussion. Instead participants can share issues and concerns in their lives or issues from or about their meditation and we can discover directly what is helpful and what is not.
The group will explore the possibility of shedding fresh light on issues of our lives, not theoretically, but from a quiet, meditative listening to each other and to oneself.
Each retreat day will include quiet sitting, group discussion, a short talk and some time to meet one on one. The day is held in silence, without talking, except for the morning talk, the afternoon discussion and one on one meetings. None of the activities are required and participants are free to find their own way. The facilitator is Jay Cutts, who has attended retreats with Toni Packer for over 30 years.
There is an introductory workshop on 11/14 from 2 to 5 pm in Albuquerque. For reservations or more info, or to be on the mailing list for future workshops, please call Jay at 281-0684 or visit:
