Black Friday with BlindDryve, Sketches in Black, Voyeur, and Traveler in Pain (Location: The Historic El Rey Theater, 622 Central Ave SW, Albuquerque, NM)
Ready to blow off some steam after Thanksgiving?
BlindDryve is an alternative metal band originally formed through a victory in the 104.7 The Edge Ultimate Band contest. Only two original members remain; Chris Sandoval and Daniel Gonzales. The two newest members are Jimmy J. Medina and Kirk Kapple. BlindDryve has a very original sound and song writing style that range anywhere from "old school thrash" to "new age metal" offering an intense, energetic live performance and addictive, adrenaline-pumping music. BlindDryve has recently released a full-length studio album, "World Insane." The album (and this Black Friday performance) is sure to surprise and leave you craving more!
It took a few months for Sketches in Black to finally come together as a band, but now that they're here, they're never looking back! They all have a wide variety of musical tastes and influences that span across the decades. From Frank Sinatra to Pantera you're bound to hear a roller coaster of melodies and harmonies in their songs. They believes in the "old" style of music of meaningful lyrics, solos, multiple chord changes, and also the new of heavy distortion and the thumping bass drums that melt faces. This doesn't mean you wouldn't find Sketches in Black doing an acoustic show for fans or at an open mic night. Diversity is what they strive for and we just know you'll love their music no matter what you're into!
Coming all the way from El Paso, Voyeur offers living proof that there's more to the South than soul food, rebels and such. Voyeur is a band that stakes its artistry on its versatility and open-mindedness. Casting a wide net, Voyeur pulls in musical inspiration from a broad range of music and experiences and attempts to reinvent those inspirations into music that covers just as wide a range. Boredom takes a backseat when listening to Voyeur. With everything Voyeur has got going on, it's nearly impossible to take the time to stop and smell roses. But that's okay; Voyeur has bigger and better things than roses to concern itself with.
Traveler in Pain has been rocking New Mexico crowds for over ten years! The band offers a broad, diverse and entertaining musical experience time and time again. At times, the members have changed, as well as the musical content. However, the dedication, perseverance and the inspiration provided by the "family of pain" (fan base), have provided the opportunity to perform on a consistent basis to friends new and old. The band consists of Lance Sedillo, lead vocals and rhythm guitar, James Campbell Lead Guitar and back-up vocals, Todd Wilburn Drums and recording producer/engineer, and Tom Michaels Bass and backing vocals. To date, this is the most heavy (no, not another fat joke), diverse, and the busiest line-up. Traveler in Pain plays about three weekends a month between Albuquerque's favorite live hot spots, as well as occasional trips to play in Los Lunas. The band is hard at work at incorporating a bunch of new material into the set list to make the eleventh year rocking the best so far!
This is a 21+ event.

Doors open at 7:30 PM. Show starts at 8:00 PM.
Admission: $15 in advance. Service charge, facility fee, and/or handling fee may apply. $20 at the door.
Performers: Gregory Alan Isakov and Chatter.
Proudly presented by Puccini Productions and sponsored by Whole Foods Market and BikeABQ
A mysterious traveler is coming into town: a musician with an old soul and a lot of talent. Gregory Alan Isakov is a singer-songwriter whose poetry and melodies will take you to the stars.
Born in South Africa, Isakov’s family immigrated to the U.S. in opposition to the apartheid. "The experience instilled in me the feeling that life is quality not quantity based." Isakov was seven when they settled near Philadelphia, a time he describes as understandably challenging for the family, though he personally felt at home in his new multi-cultural environment. Since then, Isakov has been a roamer. "I’ve lived in so many different places; I don’t feel indigenous to anywhere."
Isakov feels an artistic kinship with folks like Kelly Joe Phelps (he admires his ability to merge heaviness with humor) as well as Brandy Carlile, who offered to sing and record parts of "This Empty Northern Hemisphere" at her studio. The pair also cut Leonard Cohen’s "One of Us Cannot Be Wrong," as a duet. Isakov co-produced the album at various locations with Jamie Mefford who also engineered and is credited with God Noises.
He’s accompanied throughout by his band, The Freight: Jen Gilleran (drums), Jeb Bows (violin) and Phil Parker (cello). Isakov plays guitars, banjo, piano and harmonica, among other instruments. "This Empty Northern Hemisphere" is Isakov’s latest album. On it he conjures the miracles and heartaches of day-to-day living, then transforms them into melodies, with a serious commitment to songcraft and musicianship.
Chatter will be opening for Isakov. Chatter is a local chamber ensemble that was founded in 2003 by David Felberg, violinist, and Eric Walters, cellist. The group was formed in order provide opportunities in Albuquerque to hear 20th and 21st century musical works for chamber ensemble and chamber orchestra. In addition to its unique repertoire, Chatter contributes to New Mexico’s cultural life by employing the area’s finest professional musicians, whose individual artistry is honored by programming solo works. Chatter is also committed to young musicians, frequently featuring members of the Albuquerque Youth Symphony in side-by-side performances.
Advance tickets are available for $15 at Bookworks, Encore Music, Birdland, over the phone at 1-866-I-GET-TIX (1-866-443-8849), and online at GetTix.net. Service charge, facility fee, and/or handling fee may apply. You can also purchase tickets at the door the day of the show for $20.
This is a 21+ event, but because it will be fun for all ages, persons under 21 will be admitted with a parent or legal guardian.

11/29Clarifying Meditative Work - An Extended Retreat (Location: Tijeras, NM)
A one to seven day silent retreat, “Clarifying Meditative Work – An Extended Retreat”, will be held from Sunday, 11/29 to Sunday, 12/6 on ten quiet acres in Tijeras, just outside of Albuquerque. Fees range from $50 to $230, depending on the number of days you come. It is alright to come for one day or more. Advance registration is required.
The retreat will bring together people interested in meditation from any tradition - including Tibetan, Zen, Vipassana, Hindu and Western – as well as people meditating without any traditional context.
The spirit of the retreat should appeal to people who enjoy the writings of Pema Chodron, Toni Packer, Thich Nhat Hanh, Eckhart Tolle, Byron Katie and Krishnamurti, among others.
Both experienced sitters and those newly interested in meditation will have a chance to explore directly what meditative work is and how it sheds light on the concerns of our lives. The retreat does not focus on teaching techniques or spiritual theory, although it will be fine if these topics come up for discussion. Instead participants can share issues and concerns in their lives or issues from or about their meditation and we can discover directly what is helpful and what is not.
The group will explore the possibility of shedding fresh light on issues of our lives, not theoretically, but from a quiet, meditative listening to each other and to oneself.
Each retreat day will include quiet sitting, group discussion, a short talk and some time to meet one on one. The day is held in silence, without talking, except for the morning talk, the afternoon discussion and one on one meetings. None of the activities are required and participants are free to find their own way. The facilitator is Jay Cutts, who has attended retreats with Toni Packer for over 30 years.
Jay says, “Meditative work is, in its deepest sense, not theoretical, not goal oriented, not a matter of time or progress. It is the direct opening, fully complete in this moment now, to a simple, compassionate, open awareness that allows the myriad fears, clingings, confusions of the mind that we all suffer from to be revealed in a new way and at the same time brings us intimately, undividedly and lovingly in touch with the wide universe in all its profound stillness. I feel that, in our deepest hearts, it is the possibility of this openness that we come together to clarify.”
There is an introductory workshop on 11/14 from 2 to 5 pm in Albuquerque. For reservations or more info, or to be on the mailing list for future workshops, please call Jay at 281-0684 or visit:

FREE Community Academy Lecture (Location: Gardenhire Hall, Albuquerque Academy Campus)
Shadows at Dawn: A Borderlands Massacre
and the Violence of History (presented by Karl Jacoby)
* Shortly before dawn on April 30, 1871, what is considered to be one of the worst slaughters in American history, the Camp Grant Massacre,
occurred in Arizona. This early morning assault generated a heated debate that raised important questions about the relationship between history
and violence. In this lecture we will discuss how this massacre illuminates one of the great ironies of the historical process—violence produces vast silences in the historical record yet also creates history.
* Karl Jacoby is a tenured associate professor of history at Brown University. The author of Shadows at Dawn: A Borderlands Massacre and the Violence of History, he serves on the board of editors for the Encyclopedia of American Environmental History. Karl received his Ph.D. and M.A. from Yale University and his A.B. from Brown University.

12/4FRAN HARDY | Ancient Stories (Location: 130 Lincoln Avenue, Suite F, Santa Fe, NM 87501)
Fran Hardy’s solo exhibition explores how the ancient inspires the contemporary as well as blurring the boundaries between realism and abstraction. Ancient trees and primordial plants provide symbolism and fertile material for her works as well as symbols that emerge from the abstract ‘ooze’ with references from ancient cultures such as sacred math, petroglyphs and textiles.
Her drawings and paintings of trees, are part of a lifelong preoccupation that centers around very elaborate, otherworldly large scale drawings and their interpretation into paintings which hover between abstraction and realism. She begins with drawings of trees in pencil and graphite on panel that writhe with an unearthly intensity and from which imagery will unconsciously emerge in the midst of the tapestry of fine lines as she draws. The viewer is engaged as the longer they look images that reflect their own imaginings come to mind out of the meticulous detail.
The realistic element in these detailed drawings is then juxtaposed into the paintings with abstract compositions rendered in a variety of media from oil pastel over watercolor sgraffito as well as graphite and acrylic. Scratching into the copper plates in her intaglio printmaking has inspired the oil pastel over watercolor paintings where she scribes through the layers of oil pastel to reveal the watercolor and acrylic grounds below and render the elaborate drawings of her paintings with their abstract and realist underpinnings. She often uses mirror images to create a Rorschach-like mystery open to the viewer’s interpretation
Her paintings and drawings of trees talk about what we can lose if we do not preserve our ancient forests both ecologically as they maintain water and stabilize temperature as well as their spiritual contribution with a connection to all of the history that has passed below their spreading branches.
Madelon Sheedy, Curator at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art who gave her the first of her six solo museum shows has said of her work ”It is obvious that Fran Hardy paints what interests and inspires her, emphasizing the interplay between light and dark and forcing us to look at, rather than into or through the commonplace. The elegance in her work heightens the importance of the ephemeral and makes it timeless.”
Ms Hardy studied at the School of Visual Arts and Parsons School of Design in NYC as well as receiving bachelor and masters degrees in art education at Kutztown University and Temple University. She received a Florida Individual Artist Fellowship and has had six solo museum exhibitions one of which was a 15 Year Retrospective. She is represented in NYC by a Madison Avenue gallery, several galleries in Florida and Evoke Contemporary in Santa Fe. ”Fran Hardy, In a Brilliant Light” a documentary about her work aired on Orlando PBS, WMFE-TV in conjunction with her traveling show of the same name across the state of Florida in 2001.A recent traveling show entitled “Pentimento” traveled to museums across the country. Her work is in museum collections nationwide. In 2004, she and her husband moved to New Mexico near the rural town of Lamy about twenty minutes from Santa Fe where her fusion of abstraction and realism was born in a bold move from her previous work. Select PBS stations have aired and FEC/PAEC-TV, international educational station continues to air a new documentary on her work, “Pentimento , The Artist’s Process” which focuses on her work and process in her new and innovative New Mexico inspired work.

50th Anniversary Open House (Location: Partyline Florist)
Partyline Florist celebrates its 50th Anniversary with an open house, Saturday, December 5, 2009 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The 50th Anniversary open house includes refreshments, music, half a century of Partyline memorabilia, free flower giveaways and a drawing to win a bouquet of flowers each month for a year, valued at $50 each. Participants in the drawing need not be present to win. Partyline Florist is located at 4200 Fourth Street, NW (between Candelaria and Griegos).
Since 1959, Partyline has enlivened celebrations and commemorated occasions of all sorts with flowers, plants, gifts, cards, balloons, plush animals and gourmet gift baskets.
“When I started at what used to be Blank’s party supply and rental, I had no idea that I’d be celebrating 50 years as one of the lasting floral businesses in Albuquerque,†says owner Craig Yoshimoto. In 1977, Craig and Nancy Yoshimoto purchased the company, changed the name to Partyline Florist. Craig has been at the helm ever since. Partyline belongs to Teleflora, a flowers-by-wire service, and is a top 2000 member of Teleflora’s 27,000 international partners.
As recently as the 1990s, Albuquerque boasted 150 floral shops. The number is now under 50, with Partyline leading the way with its six employees and twice daily citywide delivery from its floral decorated van. Partyline has changed as technology changed, too. Where staff used to hand write orders, invoices and monthly statements, the store’s second-generation computer system now integrates orders, accounting, inventory and customer purchases, data that is also used to track buying patterns. The store has bilingual staff to accommodate Spanish-speaking customers.
For information or interviews, contact Craig Yoshimoto at Partyline Florist, 505-344-3538 or visit

FILMS:
1:30pm MUSTANG: JOURNEY OF TRANSFORMATION (30 min)
The Himalayan Kingdom of Mustang is one of the last sanctuaries of authentic Tibetan Buddhist culture. Long isolated by geography and politics, the people have struggled to survive, and the 15th century monasteries that are the center of their culture have come dangerously close to collapsing. MUSTANG tells the story of a Tibetan culture that ha pulled back from the brink of extinction through the restoration of its sacred sites. NARRATED BY RICHARD GERE AND FEATURING HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA.
2:00pm SKY BURIAL (12 min)
This film follows the ritual of "jha-tor", the giving of alms to birds in a northern Tibetan monastery, where the bodies of the dead are offered to the vultures as a final act of kindness to living beings. At the Drigung Monastery lamas chant to call the consciousness from the body. Juniper incense is burned to summon the vultures. Special body breakers, or "rogyapas", unwrap the bodies and cut away the flesh. The bones are crushed and mixed with tsampa (roasted barley flour). The entire body is consumed by the birds, assuring the ascent of the soul. The sky, or the universe, is where the sacred world lies. To merge with the sky after death is a holy event, one that replaces the sufferings of this world with peace.
2:30pm Q & A with Tibetan lama VEN. TRAGA RINPOCHE
3:00pm THE DEVOTION OF MATTHIEU RICARD (67 min)
Nearly 40 years ago Matthieu Ricard left his native France and a promising career in cellular genetics to become a monk in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition in Nepal. He is now a translator, photographer, and best-selling author (The Monk and The Philosopher, Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill), and an active participant in scientific research on the effects of meditation on the brain. He is involved in a number of humanitarian projects in Tibet and Nepal, where he resides. This intimate portrait journeys with Matthieu as he continues the work of his late teacher, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, in the Himalayas, and as he serves as translator for His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Europe and participates in scientific research there. His vivid photography and accessible stories of a monk's life in the Himalayas feature throughout. Filmed on location in Europe, Tibet, India and Nepal, with footage and photographs of Tibet by Matthieu Ricard.

Le Chat Lunatique CD Release Party (Location: The Historic El Rey Theater, 622 Central Ave SW, Albuquerque, NM)
with special guests
The Midnight Creepers * The Saltine Ramblers * Eva Ave and Carlosaur
Date: Saturday, 5 December 2009
Time: Doors open at 8:00 PM. Show starts at 8:30 PM.
Admission: $10.
Performers: Le Chat Lunatique, The Midnight Creepers, The Saltine Ramblers, and Eva Ave & Carlosaur.
Email: elreytheater@qwestoffice.net
Le Chat Lunatique plays a combination of Gypsy Swing, Western Swing, and anything else that they damn well please! Filthy, Mangy Jazz is their forte! All of this madness came about due to John Sandlin and Muni Kulasinghe's mutual love for the great Hot Club of France, a gypsy swing group from 1940's Paris, which included the combined genius of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli. Jared Putnam's western swing background has fused itself into the mix and given them a fine repertoire of classic western swing tunes. In addition, Fernando Garavito's latin background has seeped into the rhythmic palette and given them a formidable groove.
The Midnight Creepers spend their time paying tribute to some of the legends of Soul and Blues, such as Lou Donaldson, Rueben Wilson, Jimmy McGriff, Lonnie Smith. Their rare Groove, Bogaloo, Funk, Soul, Blues-inspired Jazz, organ music, or whatever you want to call it, is undeniable to the soul and the feet. The line-up includes Michael Jaramillo on Traps, Colin Darby on Saxophones, Mathew Lowe on Electric Guitar, Nate K., Eric O., or Cameron Bourg on Electric Bass, and James Breslin on Organ/Keys. Although The Midnight Creepers main focus is on the "Rare Groove" genre, the sound of the band still remains quite rare and unique.
The Saltine Ramblers formed in late 2004 in the Albuquerque, New Mexico area. The current lineup features original members Kevin Strange and Cory Minefee with Dave Ivey and Dave Payne. The Ramblers perform their own brand of bizarre Americana, and compliment it with old-time fiddle tunes, bluegrass standards and not-so-standards, rock n' roll, Rio Grande delta blues and so on. The Saltine Ramblers completed their first self-released album "Gajos De Manderina" in April '05 and have since created a series of free home recordings for distribution at shows. These include "Salt Trek" and "Friskey" from 2006 and "Warning: The Saltine Ramblers!" from 2007.
This is a 21+ event.

Lights On Villa Verde Charity Event To Help Under Privileged Children
Rio Rancho, NM (November 16, 2009) – S.E.V.V.A. (South East Villa Verde Crime Watch Association) has announced today that it will be hosting a charity Christmas lights & luminaries display in its Villa Verde Drive SE neighborhood on Saturday, December 12, 2009 from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. The charity event is to raise cash and new toy donations that will directly benefit the 2009 Rio Rancho Police Department’s - Children’s Christmas Party for under privileged children in the Rio Rancho community.
The annual Children’s Christmas Party is held for under privileged children in the Rio Rancho Community and provides them with a meal and the opportunity to meet Santa and receive a special gift. The Rio Rancho Police Department works closely with the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) and the Rio Rancho Elementary School counseling services to locate these children and invite them to the party. Last year, there were close to 500 children from the Rio Rancho community in attendance.
The Christmas lights & luminaries display will begin at the corner of Sabana Grande Avenue SE and Villa Verde Drive SE in Rio Rancho and head North up Villa Verde Drive. The lights will be on for viewing by the community on Saturday, December 12th from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. Viewers are encouraged to walk or drive along the road to see the displays that local residents have set up on their homes. Cub Scout Pack 714 will have a refreshments stand with cookies, coffee and hot cocoa and will be collecting donations for the event. Volunteers from S.E.V.V.A., the Rio Rancho Police Department and the Rio Rancho Police Explorers Post will be there to greet passersby and receive cash donations and/or new, unwrapped toys for the children. Santa Clause will also be in attendance to make sure everyone has a jolly time.
“In addition to helping fight crime in our neighborhood, we like to get involved with events or activities that support our local community,” said Scott Valenti, president of S.E.V.V.A. “In past years we have participated in neighborhood cleanup programs and even hosted a Safety Seminar Event on our street.” Every resident of the crime watch group has committed to illuminating their home for the event. “I’ll be hooking up 20,000+ lights and sequencing them to Christmas music,” said Tom Trotter, Treasurer of S.E.V.V.A. and one of residents in the area. “You will even be able to listen to the music on your car stereo as you drive by.”

1/29Celtic Crossroads (Location: The Historic El Rey Theater)
Just when you think that you have seen the best that Irish music has to offer, a fresh new show from Ireland is taking the art form to an entirely new level. Celtic Crossroads presents Irish music like never before, set to do to Irish music what Riverdance has done to Irish dance.
The name Celtic Crossroads originates from a time in Ireland when neighboring communities met at the crossroads between towns and villages to socialize – long before the pub tradition began. With a focus on keeping the tradition of Irish music alive, each performer nurtures this bygone concept, but by virtue of their young age and raw talent, they high-kick this tradition into the 21st Century. True high-kicking from some of Irelands best-respected Irish dancers also intensifies the pulsating rhythms of the show.
The live concerts are a spectacle of talent, displaying how Irish music influenced the global birth of a multitude of musical genres. This show is redefining Irish music by going right to the heart of its rhythms. The inventive arrangements and bass-driven grooves are steering Irish acoustic music into surprising new territory. On its first American visit, word-of mouth alone led to a sell out tour!
The show itself, incorporating seven world-class musicians playing over twenty instruments on stage, is a fantastic spectacle. From start to finish you will be captivated by a wonderful fusion of musical genres in the Irish music family, such as eastern European Gypsy, north American Bluegrass, world Classical and Jazz, and the various forms of Celtic music from around Europe and the rest of the world.
Magical interludes from the haunting uilleann pipes, whistles, low whistles, and of course the Irish harp, along with some of Ireland's finest exponents of traditional song transport the listener to that crossroads in Ireland. Tempestuous fiddle playing competes with explosive banjo, intricate mandolin, accordion, mandola and bouzouki and awe-inspiring guitar riffs, while silky flute playing remind the audience that these fiercely traditional musicians are also classically trained.
Throw in thunderous bodhran rhythms, drum kit, and cajon and the audience finds themselves recklessly and ecstatically stomping along. As the thunder starts to take hold, rhythms beating, Irish dancers defying laws of speed and gravity, musicians swapping instruments before your eyes, building and rising from a slow groove to a climactic, epic and all-encompassing wildness of unadulterated genius, audiences are unable to prevent themselves from jumping to their feet in thunderous ovation.
The show’s success is rapidly gathering momentum as it leaves a trail of enthralled audiences behind it. Already, 2009 is shaping up to be the best year yet for Celtic Crossroads with performances scheduled in some of America’s most prestigious venues, as well as further tours in Ireland, Europe, Mexico and Japan.
This is an all ages event.

Jesus Muñoz Flamenco Por Derecho in Noche Flamenca (Location: The Historic El Rey Theater, 622 Central Ave SW, Albuquerque, NM)
only $15 for UNM students with student ID. $15 for Children 12 and under accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. $25 for everyone else.
Performers: Jesus Muñoz will host nationally and internationally renowned artists of the highest caliber (TBA).
Email: elreytheater@qwestoffice.net or jesus@jesusmunozflamenco.com
If you want to be overindulged for just one night then this is it. This evening's performance will feature nationally and internationally renowned artists of the highest caliber. Imagine Carnegie hall meets a small bar in southern Spain and what you get is nothing less than the highest quality musicians and dancers set within a raw, yet uniquely intimate setting of tablao-style flamenco and all of its idiosyncrasies. Yes! Wine, tapas, virtuosic footwork, guitar, beautifully-figured women in gorgeous dresses and handsome, talented men that will have you melting in your chair.
What to expect? Expect the unexpected. This group is dedicated to taking risks; all the risks that are necessary to allow for the exploration and development of the cante jondo, or deep song. What does "Flamenco Por Derecho" mean? Dancing "Por Derecho" has always been considered the purest and perhaps one of the most difficult ways to dance Flamenco. Reason: It is heavy on improvisation and even when choreographed it relies almost solely on the interpretation of the song. If the song changes, the dance must follow, therefor the dancer in essence becomes a musician and more specifically like the conductor of an orchestra.
This is a 21+ event, but because it will be fun for all ages, persons under 21 will be admitted with a parent or legal guardian.
