Space-Based Accuracy from Ground-Based Telescopes: Measurement Astrophysics (MAP) (Location: University of New Mexico Regener Hall)
We live in an era of astronomy and astrophysics in which significant fundamental questions abound. We are on the verge of deciding if terrestrial planets exist in the habitable zones of other stars. The structure of the universe traced by galaxies indicates that galaxies are more massive than they appear by approximately an order of magnitude, due (by definition) to unseen mass. By far the most significant question in physics (at least by volume) is the nature of the dark energy that modulates the acceleration of the universe. This era of fundamental questions was brought to us by precision astrophysical measurements. We propose that enhanced precision and accuracy for astrophysical measurements, many of them made by ground-based telescopes, is the way to solve some of these problems.
Earth’s atmosphere hinders precise, accurate ground-based astronomical measurements. It is a compositionally ever-changing, scattering, absorbing medium with temporally and spatially changing index of refraction and it supports optical structures and turbulence on many scales. Therefore, our UNM research group is developing techniques of Measurement Astrophysics (MAP) which we are applying first to Earth's atmosphere.
With multiple measurements of scattering and absorption in the atmosphere, we can correct ground-based astronomical observations to rival the precision of space-based observations. Innovative instrumentation shown to allow corrections for astronomical extinction – the total light lost to an astronomical observation – includes a “clear air” lidar and a bright star spectrophotometer. A wide-field imaging telescope allows extinction corrections to be proven correct. We are showing that MAP techniques can enable photometric measurements for ground-based telescopes with sub-1% errors, often achieving the fundamental photon noise limit. MAP techniques are thus obviating Earth’s evil atmosphere.
But wait! There’s more! When you attend this colloquium you’ll hear how once again astronomy retains its place as the most socially relevant science ever practiced by humans.
John McGraw, professor in the Physics and Astronomy Department at the University of New Mexico, will be the guest speaker during the March 27 general meeting of The Albuquerque Astronomical Society. The meeting is free and open to the public. The meeting will be held in Regener Hall, and it will begin at 7 p.m. For information call 505-254-TAAS, or visit

Become an important part of this special facility and help us Connect People to Place
Locally known simply as the bosque, Albuquerque’s riverside forest undulates with life. Step under the canopy of the cottonwoods and listen to the ensemble of birds; compare animal tracks in the Rio Grande mud; follow the drifting bug; and wonder what on earth the tangle of rusting metal angle iron, cable and wire could possibly be. Step into the bosque and step away from the city.
The bosque is the year-round oasis in our high desert environment and offers habitat for a large variety of birds, mammals, insects, amphibians, reptiles and plants. If you haven’t noticed, there is flirting going on in our inter-urban habitat. This is an especially active time for wildlife. This forest also retains the tracks of its relationship with its most influential neighbor—people.
Is the bosque a mystery to you? Or would you like to learn more about its wild residents and its history? Join veteran naturalist Vern Huser and birder Charlie Wood for a guided walk into this unusual habitat and discover this world away from the city.
Guided walk will begin and end at the Open Space Visitor Center off of Coors Blvd between Paseo del Norte and Montano Rd NW. The walk will be followed by coffee and tea donated by the Open Space Alliance, a non-profit partner supporting educational programming in Open Space. Prepare for a 1.5 - 2 hour easy walk and bring water, a hat and wear comfortable walking shoes. Binoculars are recommended. Space is limited to 20 people.
The Open Space Visitor Center (map) is located at 6500 Coors Blvd. NW. Take Bosque Meadows Rd. East from Coors to the parking area at the end of the road. Bosque Wild:Guided Nature Walk (Location: Open Space Visitor Center 6500 Coors Blvd,N.W.)
The Center is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM and closed Mondays. Call 897-8831 or email openspace@cabq.gov to register for the walk or for more information or visit

Caravan to peace (Location: Kimo Theater)
Caravan to Peace will be held at the historic KiMo Theater in downtown Albuquerque on Friday, April 9, 2010. The event features the world premiere screening of an inspiring documentary-Stealing the Light-and a concert by world-renowned oud virtuoso Rahim Al-Haj. For VIP ticket holders, the reception with Afghani food and an opportunity to meet filmmaker Aimie Burns, Rahim Al-Haj and Dr. Mohammad Khan Kharoti starts at 6:00pm. The main event will begin at 7:00pm.
Stealing the Light chronicles the work of Dr. Mohammad Khan Kharoti who founded Green Village Schools in 2001 as a means to lasting peace and democracy by providing quality secular education to girls and boys in war-torn Afghanistan. The main compound with more than 1,200 students was reduced to rubble by gunmen in October 2008. The gunmen stole every book, chalkboard, and desk, and tore the school down beam by beam, brick by brick until nothing was left.
Founded in 2007, Project PeacePal is an international peace through education organization striving to create the next generation of leaders and peace builders through friendships and the application of peace building skills in daily life. Project PeacePal and Green Village Schools are collaborating to continue Dr. Kharoti's courageous project.
A photo exhibit featuring the children of Green Village Schools and a silent auction will round out the evening. Your attendance will help us rebuild the school and restore the light that was stolen from the children of Afghanistan.

Applications Due for 2010 Teachers' Workshop (Location: Santa Fe and Los Alamos)
The Manhattan Project was the top-secret effort in World War II to build an atomic bomb. Its impact on history, politics, science and society has been profound, not only for the nation and the world but also for New Mexico. If you are a teacher who would like to learn more about the Manhattan Project and its legacy, see the museums and historic sites at Santa Fe and Los Alamos, and share lesson plans and curriculum ideas for teaching about the Manhattan Project, don’t miss the professional development workshop in Santa Fe and Los Alamos from Monday, June 14, to Thursday, June 17, 2010.
The Atomic Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit organization in Washington, DC, is presenting an intensive three-and-a-half-day workshop for New Mexico teachers at St. John’s College, in Santa Fe, NM, with field trips to historic Santa Fe sites and the San Ildefonso Pueblo. The workshop will include a single-night stay in Los Alamos and tours of Manhattan Project properties. Depending on funding, the workshop will also be held in 2011.
Prominent historians, authors, veterans and government officials will talk about various aspects of the Manhattan Project in New Mexico and its legacy. Following the New Mexico State Department of Education’s standards, the topics include geography, science, history and the social and cultural impacts of the Manhattan Project.
Special tours will be arranged of the New Mexico History Museum, Bradbury Science Museum, Los Alamos Historical Society Museum, J. Robert Oppenheimer’s house and other historic properties in Los Alamos, NM. Representatives from the Pueblos and Hispanic communities, Los Alamos Study Group and others will share their perspectives.
During the workshop, teachers will have a chance to share and develop curriculum ideas. All attendees will receive a “tool kit” containing curriculum suggestions along with books, audio/video materials and other classroom resources on the Manhattan Project.
Teachers will enjoy meals and accommodation in the dormitories of the St. John's College in Santa Fe and the Best Western Hilltop House in Los Alamos, NM. Those who attend all three days of the workshop will receive a $250 stipend plus a $50 travel stipend for those traveling 50 miles or more. Participating teachers may also be eligible to receive one graduate course credit from the University of New Mexico.
If you would like to attend the workshop, please complete an application form with the signature of a principal or assistant principal. For the form and more information, see

4/24Clarifying Meditative Work - A Fresh Look (Location: Wat Center, 145 Madison NE, Albuquerque)
A workshop, “Clarifying Meditative Work – A Fresh Look”, will be held on Saturday, 4/24 , 2 to 5 pm at the Wat Center, at 145 Madison NE, corner of Madison and Copper, east of Washington in Albuquerque. It is also ok to leave at 3:45. $2 donation. Also on 5/22.
The workshop will bring together people interested in meditation from any tradition - including Tibetan, Zen, Vipassana, Hindu and Western – as well as people meditating without any traditional context. The spirit of the day should appeal to people who like the writings of Eckhart Tolle, Pema Chodron, Toni Packer, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Krishnamurti, among others.
Both experienced sitters and those newly interested in meditation will have a chance to explore directly what meditative work is and how it sheds light on the concerns of our lives.
The workshop will not focus on the learning of either techniques or spiritual theory, although it will be fine if these topics come up for discussion. Instead participants can bring up issues and concerns in their lives or issues from or about their meditation. The group will explore the possibility of shedding fresh light on these issues, not theoretically, but from a quiet, meditative listening to each other and to oneself.
The day will include quiet sitting, group discussion, a short talk and some time to visit with each other. The facilitator is Jay Cutts, who has attended retreats with Toni Packer for over 35 years. Jay meets from time to time with people from diverse backgrounds to clarify meditative work together.
Jay says, “Meditative work is, in its deepest sense, not theoretical, not goal oriented, not a matter of time or progress. It is the direct opening, fully complete in this moment now, to a simple, compassionate, open awareness that allows the myriad fears, clingings, confusions of the mind that we all suffer from to be revealed in a new way and at the same time brings us intimately, undividedly and lovingly in touch with the wide universe in all its profound stillness. I feel that, in our deepest hearts, it is the possibility of this openness that we come together to clarify.”
For reservations or more info, or to be on the mailing list for future workshops, please call Jay at 281-0684. Additional workshops on 5/22 and 6/19. There is a seven day silent retreat December, which is conducted in the same tradition-neutral way, on 10 quiet acres in Tijeras.

Following Success of First Race, ABQ Little Theatre Plans Spring Fun Run (Location: Albuquerque Little Theatre)
On Sunday, May 16 from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. ALT will sponsor another run to raise funds for the Theatre. In spite of a most successful season, the fact is that ticket sales—even if every seat sold for every single performance—accounts for less than 70 percent of the organization’s operating expenses. A 75-year-old historic building, the first edifice in New Mexico built by the WPA, needs a lot of things to remain current and serve the theatergoing public.
The spring event will feature a 10K run, a 5K run/walk and a Kids’ K. The 10K and 5K will be timed events to accommodate serious runners. Race participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite character in a play—a move that is sure to bring plenty of photo ops! Prizes will be awarded in a number of categories.
Live entertainment, free water, delicious fresh breads, lemonade and cookies will be provided, and sponsors will be onsite in ALT’s extensive parking lot with various products and services of interest to walkers and runners.
Advance entry fee is $25.00 per runner, $30.00 after May 10, and $35.00 onsite. The entry fee includes a commemorative T-shirt. Fee for entry into the Kids’ K will be $10.00 for both pre-registration and race day.

5/22Clarifying Meditative Work - A Fresh Look (Location: Wat Center, 145 Madison NE, Albuquerque)
A workshop, “Clarifying Meditative Work – A Fresh Look”, will be held on Saturday, 5/22 , 2 to 5 pm at the Wat Center, at 145 Madison NE, corner of Madison and Copper, east of Washington in Albuquerque. It is also ok to leave at 3:45. $2 donation. Also on 6/19.

5/2828th Annual Memorial Day Motorcycle Rally (Location: Red River)
May 28-31, 2010. This year marks the 28th annual celebration of the hottest motorcycle rally in northern New Mexico. Red River is one of the most popular tourist destinations due to its scenic location and great climate. Centrally located in the beautiful north central mountains of New Mexico, Red River is the closest resort area to Texas and Oklahoma, as well as a short drive from Southern Colorado. At 8,750 feet above sea level, Red River is perched high in the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range and surrounded by 1.5 million acres of the Carson National Forest.
You can participate in the rally activities that begin on Friday by registering at the Chamber booth located on Main Street and Jacks & Sixes for the Official “Run” that begins at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Your $5 registration includes an Official pin or patch as well as a Player’s Card from Taos Mountain Casino. You can also sign-up for the 50/50 cash drawing that will take place at 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Cruise the “Enchanted Circle”; a scenic 84-mile tour that takes you through a spectacular alpine valley that includes Angel Fire and Eagle Nest, then make a stop in Taos at the Taos Mountain Casino to use your Player’s Card. The Rally is 1 mile of food, leather, jewelry, motorcycle accessories, live music, and of course 30,000 of the most awesome motorcycles ever seen! The local saloons offer a variety of contests such as the best tattoo, strong man/strong woman, the longest ponytail, oldest Red River Rally t-shirt, and the farthest distance traveled on a motorcycle.
Monday begins with CMA non-denominational services followed with a ride up to Angel Fire for the parade and ceremonies at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park in Angel Fire.
Many rallies claim to have the most beautiful scenic rides. There is no way to really compare one area of our beautiful country to another, but Red River is definitely one of the top picks for the most scenic riding at a rally.
