Keep those holiday pounds off, and even lose fat and inches with Upward Motion Personal Training’s 12-week P90XŇ training program. This four-day per week program begins November 9, 2009. P90XŇ is a program developed by celebrity trainer Tony Horton designed to transform your body from regular to ripped in just 90 days.
“We’re the only certified P90XŇ certified trainers in New Mexico,” says Luis Alvidrez, owner of Upward Motion Personal Training. “Our training sessions give you the benefit of the incredibly effective P90XŇ program, the personalized attention of a certified trainer, and the camaraderie and support of the others in the class. But don’t you miss this session, the next one won’t be until January 2010.”

FREE Community Academy Lecture: 300-Fact or Fiction? (Location: Gardenhire Hall, Albuquerque Academy Campus)
300: Fact or Fiction? (presented by Dr. Rich Field)
* Did the Spartans at Thermopylae really fight without body armor? Was Xerxes Persian or African? Did the Spartans really kick the Persian messengers down a well? Why has this struggle been recorded as one of the most famous last stands in all of military history? Come and hear the story recounted by Herodotus of the second Persian War, as we contrast it with the glib manipulation and outright fantasies of Hollywood. We’ll talk about events leading up to the titanic clash at the “Hot Gates” and two decisive battles that followed close on its heels as well as contrast Spartan
military training and equipment with that of the Persian forces. If you’ve always wanted to learn more about the paradigmatic Spartan military duel, this lecture is for you!
* Richard Field has taught history at Albuquerque Academy since 1991 and senior humanities since 1995. He earned his Ph.D. at UNM in 1993, and his M.A. in the great books from St. John’s College in Santa Fe in 1998.

Liquid Gypsy with special guests Stephanie Hatfield & Hot Mess (Location: The Historic El Rey Theater, 622 Central Ave SW, Albuquerque, NM)
Doors open at 7:30 PM. Show starts at 8:00 PM.
Admission: $7.
Performers: Liquid Gypsy and Stephanie Hatfield & Hot Mess.
Liquid Gypsy is Albuquerque's premiere psychedelic rock band, playing a blend of original songs mixed with a healthy dose of their own "spin" on The Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic, The Allman Brothers Band, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, and others. Jam band and classic rock fans of all kinds will feel right at home on Liquid Gypsy's dance floor. Though heavily "dosed" with versions of some of your favorite tunes, the band has developed and mastered its own unique style of collaborating not only with one another, but also with their audience. Liquid Gypsy is guaranteed to keep you shakin' on Shakedown Street! The band can hardly wait to show off the new additions to the band and their mesmerizing light show. Liquid Gypsy is Scott Bruggeman (keys & vocals), Larry Jaramillo (guitar & vocals), Mike Druxman (bass & vocals), Steve Henao (drums), and the newest addition, Jacob Lowery, whom you may remember from Seth and Jacob (guitar).
Originally from the Detroit area, Stephanie Hatfield began singing in 3 different church choirs at the age of 8. Her first solo in front of a congregation of 200 began her life long passion for performing that has been evident to anyone who has heard her. Focusing primarily on classical music she began competing and performing which eventually led her to study classical performance at Michigan State University. Originally in pursuit of opera, she promptly fell in love with Jazz improv which began the second phase of her musical education. A move out West after college brought an expansion of musical experience including broadway, country, folk and rock. After compiling a collection of original music, Stephanie has been in the studio at Frogville to create her debut album with amazing musicians such as Matt McClinton (grunge rocker and amazing producer), Bill Palmer (Hundred Year Flood guitarist and Frogville engineer/producer), Jason Aspeslet (drummer of Trilobite, Zaduo, The Quartrio, and Bernadette Seacrest), Kevin Zoernig (keyboard genius) and Tommy Stephenson (keys for Tommy Bolin, Joe Walsh, Eric Clapton, The Eagles, and more).

11/14Clarifying Meditative Work - A Fresh Look (Location: Wat Temple, 145 Madison NE, Albuquerque (corner of Madison and Washington))
A workshop, “Clarifying Meditative Work – A Fresh Look”, will be held on Saturday, 11/14 , 2 to 5 pm at the Wat Center, at 145 Madison NE, corner of Madison and Copper, east of Washington in Albuquerque. It is also ok to leave at 3:45. $2 donation.
..
The workshop will bring together people interested in meditation from any tradition - including Tibetan, Zen, Vipassana, Hindu and Western – as well as people meditating without any traditional context. The spirit of the day should appeal to people who like the writings of Eckhart Tolle, Pema Chodron, Toni Packer, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Krishnamurti, among others.
..
Both experienced sitters and those newly interested in meditation will have a chance to explore directly what meditative work is and how it sheds light on the concerns of our lives.
..
The workshop will not focus on the learning of either techniques or spiritual theory, although it will be fine if these topics come up for discussion. Instead participants can bring up issues and concerns in their lives or issues from or about their meditation. The group will explore the possibility of shedding fresh light on these issues, not theoretically, but from a quiet, meditative listening to each other and to oneself.
..
The day will include quiet sitting, group discussion, a short talk and some time to visit with each other. The facilitator is Jay Cutts, who has attended retreats with Toni Packer for over 35 years. Jay meets from time to time with people from diverse backgrounds to clarify meditative work together.
..
Jay says, “Meditative work is, in its deepest sense, not theoretical, not goal oriented, not a matter of time or progress. It is the direct opening, fully complete in this moment now, to a simple, compassionate, open awareness that allows the myriad fears, clingings, confusions of the mind that we all suffer from to be revealed in a new way and at the same time brings us intimately, undividedly and lovingly in touch with the wide universe in all its profound stillness. I feel that, in our deepest hearts, it is the possibility of this openness that we come together to clarify.”
..
For reservations or more info, or to be on the mailing list for future workshops, please call Jay at 281-0684. There is a seven day silent retreat Nov. 30 to Dec. 6, which is conducted in the same tradition-neutral way, on 10 quiet acres in Tijeras.

Input Sought Regarding Comprehensive Plan Update (Location: E. Stapleton Elementary School, 3100 8th Ave)
The city of Rio Rancho is updating its Vision 2020-Integrated Comprehensive Plan and is seeking input at three public meetings.
Meeting dates, times and locations include:
•Saturday, Nov. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at E. Stapleton Elementary School, 3100 8th Ave.
•Tuesday, Nov. 17 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Sandia Vista Elementary School, 6800 Franklin Road NE
•Thursday, Nov. 19 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Maggie Cordova Elementary School, 1500 Veranda SE
The comprehensive plan was established in 2001 to help guide land use planning and community development. As part of the city’s strategic plan, and due to growth and change that has occurred in Rio Rancho, an update to the comprehensive plan is being facilitated to manage and guide development.

11/29Clarifying Meditative Work - An Extended Retreat (Location: Tijeras, NM)
A one to seven day silent retreat, “Clarifying Meditative Work – An Extended Retreat”, will be held from Sunday, 11/29 to Sunday, 12/6 on ten quiet acres in Tijeras, just outside of Albuquerque. Fees range from $50 to $230, depending on the number of days you come. It is alright to come for one day or more. Advance registration is required.
The retreat will bring together people interested in meditation from any tradition - including Tibetan, Zen, Vipassana, Hindu and Western – as well as people meditating without any traditional context.
The spirit of the retreat should appeal to people who enjoy the writings of Pema Chodron, Toni Packer, Thich Nhat Hanh, Eckhart Tolle, Byron Katie and Krishnamurti, among others.
Both experienced sitters and those newly interested in meditation will have a chance to explore directly what meditative work is and how it sheds light on the concerns of our lives. The retreat does not focus on teaching techniques or spiritual theory, although it will be fine if these topics come up for discussion. Instead participants can share issues and concerns in their lives or issues from or about their meditation and we can discover directly what is helpful and what is not.
The group will explore the possibility of shedding fresh light on issues of our lives, not theoretically, but from a quiet, meditative listening to each other and to oneself.
Each retreat day will include quiet sitting, group discussion, a short talk and some time to meet one on one. The day is held in silence, without talking, except for the morning talk, the afternoon discussion and one on one meetings. None of the activities are required and participants are free to find their own way. The facilitator is Jay Cutts, who has attended retreats with Toni Packer for over 30 years.
There is an introductory workshop on 11/14 from 2 to 5 pm in Albuquerque. For reservations or more info, or to be on the mailing list for future workshops, please call Jay at 281-0684 or visit:

FREE Community Academy Lecture (Location: Gardenhire Hall, Albuquerque Academy Campus)
Shadows at Dawn: A Borderlands Massacre
and the Violence of History (presented by Karl Jacoby)
* Shortly before dawn on April 30, 1871, what is considered to be one of the worst slaughters in American history, the Camp Grant Massacre,
occurred in Arizona. This early morning assault generated a heated debate that raised important questions about the relationship between history
and violence. In this lecture we will discuss how this massacre illuminates one of the great ironies of the historical process—violence produces vast silences in the historical record yet also creates history.
* Karl Jacoby is a tenured associate professor of history at Brown University. The author of Shadows at Dawn: A Borderlands Massacre and the Violence of History, he serves on the board of editors for the Encyclopedia of American Environmental History. Karl received his Ph.D. and M.A. from Yale University and his A.B. from Brown University.

50th Anniversary Open House (Location: Partyline Florist)
Partyline Florist celebrates its 50th Anniversary with an open house, Saturday, December 5, 2009 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The 50th Anniversary open house includes refreshments, music, half a century of Partyline memorabilia, free flower giveaways and a drawing to win a bouquet of flowers each month for a year, valued at $50 each. Participants in the drawing need not be present to win. Partyline Florist is located at 4200 Fourth Street, NW (between Candelaria and Griegos).
Since 1959, Partyline has enlivened celebrations and commemorated occasions of all sorts with flowers, plants, gifts, cards, balloons, plush animals and gourmet gift baskets.
“When I started at what used to be Blank’s party supply and rental, I had no idea that I’d be celebrating 50 years as one of the lasting floral businesses in Albuquerque,” says owner Craig Yoshimoto. In 1977, Craig and Nancy Yoshimoto purchased the company, changed the name to Partyline Florist. Craig has been at the helm ever since. Partyline belongs to Teleflora, a flowers-by-wire service, and is a top 2000 member of Teleflora’s 27,000 international partners.
As recently as the 1990s, Albuquerque boasted 150 floral shops. The number is now under 50, with Partyline leading the way with its six employees and twice daily citywide delivery from its floral decorated van. Partyline has changed as technology changed, too. Where staff used to hand write orders, invoices and monthly statements, the store’s second-generation computer system now integrates orders, accounting, inventory and customer purchases, data that is also used to track buying patterns. The store has bilingual staff to accommodate Spanish-speaking customers.
For information or interviews, contact Craig Yoshimoto at Partyline Florist, 505-344-3538 or visit

This clinic is an all-volunteer clinic sponsored by Street Cat Companions, a branch of New Mexico Animal Friends. The cost is a $15 donation per cat. These Sunday clinics target cats that are unowned and unadoptable by our shelter's standards. Each cat must have a hard carrier for recovery. 1/29Celtic Crossroads (Location: The Historic El Rey Theater)
Just when you think that you have seen the best that Irish music has to offer, a fresh new show from Ireland is taking the art form to an entirely new level. Celtic Crossroads presents Irish music like never before, set to do to Irish music what Riverdance has done to Irish dance.
The name Celtic Crossroads originates from a time in Ireland when neighboring communities met at the crossroads between towns and villages to socialize – long before the pub tradition began. With a focus on keeping the tradition of Irish music alive, each performer nurtures this bygone concept, but by virtue of their young age and raw talent, they high-kick this tradition into the 21st Century. True high-kicking from some of Irelands best-respected Irish dancers also intensifies the pulsating rhythms of the show.
The live concerts are a spectacle of talent, displaying how Irish music influenced the global birth of a multitude of musical genres. This show is redefining Irish music by going right to the heart of its rhythms. The inventive arrangements and bass-driven grooves are steering Irish acoustic music into surprising new territory. On its first American visit, word-of mouth alone led to a sell out tour!
The show itself, incorporating seven world-class musicians playing over twenty instruments on stage, is a fantastic spectacle. From start to finish you will be captivated by a wonderful fusion of musical genres in the Irish music family, such as eastern European Gypsy, north American Bluegrass, world Classical and Jazz, and the various forms of Celtic music from around Europe and the rest of the world.
Magical interludes from the haunting uilleann pipes, whistles, low whistles, and of course the Irish harp, along with some of Ireland's finest exponents of traditional song transport the listener to that crossroads in Ireland. Tempestuous fiddle playing competes with explosive banjo, intricate mandolin, accordion, mandola and bouzouki and awe-inspiring guitar riffs, while silky flute playing remind the audience that these fiercely traditional musicians are also classically trained.
Throw in thunderous bodhran rhythms, drum kit, and cajon and the audience finds themselves recklessly and ecstatically stomping along. As the thunder starts to take hold, rhythms beating, Irish dancers defying laws of speed and gravity, musicians swapping instruments before your eyes, building and rising from a slow groove to a climactic, epic and all-encompassing wildness of unadulterated genius, audiences are unable to prevent themselves from jumping to their feet in thunderous ovation.
The show’s success is rapidly gathering momentum as it leaves a trail of enthralled audiences behind it. Already, 2009 is shaping up to be the best year yet for Celtic Crossroads with performances scheduled in some of America’s most prestigious venues, as well as further tours in Ireland, Europe, Mexico and Japan.
This is an all ages event.
